Hey!
In a couple of months I will be looking to buy my first car... It has to be a little one as I've just passed my test and will need it for my first job (I'm 21, female)...
Just wondering whether people think that I should spend £1000 on a banger which would cost £800+ for me to insure....
OR
Get a new car from a dealership on finance, with free insurance?
I'll be earning £17k+ at first and will need a car,
I'm thinking little cars: Yaris, Micra, Saxo, Corsa, Punto, Fiesta etc
So does anyone know of any good deals with the dealerships?
What can people recommend?
Does anyone have any experience with buying on finance?
Thanks for your help in advance ( a rather confused) ~ditzy

Hi ditzy,
You should get more replies on the motoring board, so I'll move your thread over there.

Couple of minor points to pick up...
Free insurance, just make sure your elligible. You SHOULD be at 21, but double check.
Insurance quotes, make sure you use https://www.confused.com - £800 seems alot for 21 female driver with a small car. Think you'd be looking more £500-£700
Experience of Car Finance ... don't go there! If you need to borrow money, research and get the best loan price.
Good luck with your search.0 -
thank you I did look @ confused.com and £800 was the best that could be done for a 5door, 1999, Ford Fiesta...
Thank you thoughLove hugs and glitterbugs0 -
My daughter is in exactly the same position as you, 21 and needing a first car.
Her alternatives:
1. The Old banger. You can easily buy a good Micra 1000cc for under £1000.
This should get you a well looked after, under 10yr old car with 12 months MOT, service history, fairly low mileage with several years left in it. It should be reliable, cheep to insure and it won't matter if you put a couple of small scrapes on it.
2. New cars. She'd need a loan, servicing is best done at the dealership, any scrapes need sorting through the insurance co, so building up a NCB may take longer. On the plus side, reliability should be better and safety features, n-cap ratings will be better.
Her older sister was there a few years earlier and started with an old Polo while learning, then bought a good looking Punto. (big mistake!) Lots of repair bills followed.
Look around for low insurance group cars. Just because they might be under 1000 cc, doesn't mean they are under group 2-3.
Research sites like Honest John, Autotrader, fish 4 cars etc.
Good luck.
Ps. You're not my daughter are you??Russ.0 -
if your after a new car, there are many deals with small cars on offer..how about a punto cos they are focusing on the new granda..sometimes, you can get a great offer from "lets say cars that are not in the spot light at the moment"smile everyday...cos its free
Live everyday to the Full..cos there is no tomorrow:dance:0 -

Thank you though
If you have time, pick a different car and do a quote. All my quotes were high for Fords, but lower for others...
My first insurance was £1000, 19 with no NCB (obviously) with a 1.6 engine. Would have thought a 21 year old female with a smaller car there wld be a bigger difference.0 -
As your VERY first car, try an old Fiesta & get third party fire & theft insurance - NOT fully comprehensive, choose the highest excess, say £500, this'll keep your premium low.
If you have a bump or 2 it won't be as bad as on a new car & you'll build up a bit of no claims bonus, if you can get a protected bonus policy, it'll help.
THEN in a years time, think again on NEW, ther'll be plenty of free insurance offers around, on city sized cars. This'll often work out better than buying used or nearly new.
But if you don't need finance, or would like a NEW car, think about Kia Picanto or Ford Ka or Fiesta. All have free insurance for you.

You might be living in a high risk postcode area, I just checked on tesco putting in your details for an old polo 1.3 it came out to be
585 TPFT
586 Comprehensive
Rediculous that you can't get cheaper insurance these days by having TPFT or TPO 1 pound difference between the 2 quotes !!!!
If I was you, I'd go for an old car which you can do anything you want to, and not have to worry.
A new car will depreciate rapidly, you might save on insurance but the car will be worth 15% less as soon as you drive it away and 20 - 25% less at the end of the first year.
if you do ask a dealer to do a deal, and you ask about finance, after bartering the sale price down, you can barter the interest rate on the finance deal down too. Don't accept it (the % rate) as it is when he/she first offers it to you. I don't know what the rate will be or what is acheivable as I have never bought anything on finance, but I do know it can be done, they may try to BS you saying it can't be done, but trust me it can be done.0 -
Thank you so much for all of your help!
I'll have a look at the tesco.com site and have a play around.... I really do appreciate all of your help as when it comes to cars and insurance I'm REALLY clueless..... that's boys stuff hehe
I've put in my parents postcode (it being in a garage etc) as I'll probably be returning there, although I will probably move back down to Portsmouth at some stage... Is it very illegal to say that you're keeping a car in a garage at one place (that's got a stupidly low crime rate) and in reality keeping it elsewhere?
Thank you again x
P.S Russ, you're not my father, don't panic!Love hugs and glitterbugs0 -
It isn't illegal ...
... however ...
If your car is stolen/fire/etc from place A and you told them it was in place B that would make your insurance invalid - and there would have been no point you having the insurance in the first place!!!
Tell the insurance company everything truthfully, or else it will only sting BIG TIME if anything happens.0
