Hey folks
Up until recently i had the Virgin Media Broadband and Landline package but then i asked them to disconnect my landline as i was never using it, so i now just have the Large Broadband.
I'm interested in switching to the Plusnet Value broadband only but i'm a little confused as, with Virgin Media broadband there's a cable that plugs into the modem but with plusnet I imagine you plug the modem into a phone socket.
I have a phone socket but not one anywhere near where my computer sits and wouldn't want a cable trailing round, so would i have to get a new phone socket installed? Would I have to get BT to "connect" it or whatever.
Thanks for any help. I've no idea how this stuff works.

You would have to get a phone line activated to get Plusnet but this does not have to be BT.
Plusnet will connect you up (may be a charge) but you will have line rental to pay on top of your broadband charge as all ADSL non cable broadband requires an active line.
Virgin may offer you a deal to stay with them so may be worth calling and asking what they can offer you.0 -
Thanks for replying.
So when MSE's email says it's £5.99 per month, it's not really because you have to pay line rental on top of that?
I pay £17.50 per month for the L Broadband at the moment, so maybe I would be better of just sticking with what i've got.0 -

The only supplier that can offer fixed broadband only is Virgin Cable, all other suppliers require you to have a phone line.
PlusNet is owned by BT.0 -
I have just signed up to Plusnet Value Broadband and am waiting for my line to be activated and the wireless router to arrive!!
The Web site says i will be able to connect on the 1st Oct.
Does anyone have any experience of Plusnet Broadband? I have been reading mixed reviews but its only a 12 month contract and I have no broadband at the moment!!0 -

Yes, I left them after getting so frustrated at their throttling of speeds, I have since leaving them had no further problems.
You get what you pay for with Plusnet.0 -

I have been with them for several years and have never had any problems.
It really depends on your usage if you are a comparatively light user 3 to 4GB a month which would be mainly email, surfing and occasional downloading etc. with no heavy downloading then they are fine.0 -

Yes. I have been with them for many years (since 2003). If you just want to do run of the mill internet stuff (browsing, email, even VOIP and VPN) they are fine. If you want to download the entire internet onto your PC and share it with your mates, you will be very disappointed. Large downloads and P2P are heavily throttled on Plusnet Value.
On the plus side, they do have a geograpichal support phone number (01x not 0845 etc) and UK support staff although the best support is via the community forum.0
