The best present I have ever seen given to a child was a box of promises to last till theie 21st birthday. It was a handmade christening gift.
Inside were decorated cards with promises on them, some appropriate for little ones, some for older, differing price ranges.
Examples.
I promise to take you to the zoo and buy you a cuddle toy
I promise to buy you funky wellies
I promise to buy you tickets for one concert/ sporting event
I promise you one hour of my time whenever you need me even in the middle of the night.
Ipromise to fight your corner once with your parents
I promise to pay for one birthday party.
I loved this idea as it was so thoughtful and original and better than a stuffed toy.The idea being that the child cashs one in a year.0 -
My MIL bought both of my children an apple tree to plant on their first birthdays. They are now side by side in the garden (my daughters is bigger because she has had hers 3 years longer) and both are blossoming. They like to pick the apples when they grow and help me to make crumbles etc in the summer so they get continuous enjoyment out of them. Plus there are the enviromental perks too and my children love telling their friends that they have their own tree!0

I got my daughter a lovely charm bracelet from Links of London (cost around £65, plus engraving) for her first Christmas. We are going to add a different charm each year to symbolise the things that have happened to her. I spent ages looking for a decent charm bracelet - some were too babyish, or just looked "cheap" (and I have since been worried about buying too cheap after the "silver" charm bracelets given away by Reebok turned out to be made of lead...). The one we got is expandable, so will grow with her and will be just as suitable when she is grown up as it will be when she is old enough to wear it.

A gold sovereign (or half sovereign) of the year.
My aunty bought my DD a lovely little winnie the pooh pot, no more than and inch wide and high with a screw on lid. Inside at the bottom it has DDs name - it's absolutely beautifulI haven't got one!0 -
I made my son a book around his first birthday. It was full of photos and pictures of all the words he could tell me about and a description of how he said the word. (eg he would say yumyum when he was hungry, wiggle his fingers for star, say 'hoo' for owl etc.) I tried to include funny stories about those words too. (eg when he signed 'dog' to me when he saw a dalmation, then I pointed to a jack russel behind it and he thought it was hilarious that they were both dogs but looked so different.)
I gave a copy to his grandparents too so he could look at the book with them too. It meant that he had a whole book of things that he knew about and could 'talk' about. And he still likes to look at it now sometimes.
It took a while to do, but I just put it all on the computer (and googled for pictures of things like animals and the sun) with a box of text underneath. Nothing very adventurous but it worked. And it was the start of a great hobby for me too.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -

i love the idea of the box of promises, think that is lovely.
my suggestion was going to be a pine toy box, thats what we bought our son for his 1st birthday, seems a tad not as special following the above post however.0
