  • No there are tuition fees in Scotland, believe me there are, i can scan my SAAS letter if needed to prove it. We personally dont pay them though, the student loan company do and it gets added to your debt which you pay off when you start earing £15k a year.

In Scotland if you are doing an NQ/NC, or access to type of course there is not tuition fees, but if doing a HNC, HND, or at uni then there are fees, they just dont come directly out of our pocket...well unitl we have to start paying it back!

Well, I'm absolutely flummoxed because my understanding was that Scottish students, studying in Scotland, didn't pay fees.

The SAAS site seems to be down but the University of Sterling site says

"Will I have to pay tuition fees?

If you are classed as being ordinarily resident in Scotland or another European Union (EU) country outside the UK, and are going to be studying full-time in Scotland, you will not be required to pay tuition fees. All tuition fees will be paid on your behalf by the Scottish Government through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). Students must apply for this funding every year."

Anybody able to throw any light on this?

Like i said the student loan company pay your fees while your studying.
But in the long run you need to pay it back when you start earning £15k a year

    2006/07 or later £1820
Tuition Fees are paid by students studying at University in order to cover the cost of lectures, teaching facilities and handouts.
The amount you pay in fees depends on where you come from and the type of course you intend to study.

students who live in Scotland should apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) each year to get their tuition fees paid. You must apply early to make sure you are paid at the start of the first semester.

But this says that you get your fees paid for you, not that you take out a fee loan!

    I don't think she is; I think she's misunderstood.
  • The SAAS site is now working again, so I'll quote it.

    "Will you pay my fees?
Eligible Scottish domiciled and EU students studying in Scotland are entitled to free tuition. We will pay tuition fees straight to your institution."
