I've been sorting out some indoor plants. They were originally grown in homemade compost which consisted of some other seeds that survived the composting process.

These are the two plants "unintentionally" grown -

It would be interesting to know what they are please.

Agree that No 1 is a cucurbit of some sort

Second plant root system looks like a runner bean but I'm not sure about leaf shape

Both cucurbits, esp if the stalks are spiky.
  • The first one looks like my crystal lemon cucumbers did .

Thanks for the replies. The first one does look like cucumber. I do remember lots of inedible cucumbers going into the compost bin and have also tried "unsuccessfully" to grow cucumbers this year but not in the particular pots were they appeared(?).
Similarly,I have tried to grow bean species (?type) this year so will consider that idea too.
  • The second one looks like bryony which climbs. I have it in my garden. It comes up every year and is very difficult to get rid of. It produces berries which drop to the ground and produce more plants. Might be wrong but that's what it looks like to me;).

    Could this be nipplewort?

Could this be shepherds purse gone to seed? It's the top half of the plant and the whole plant is over one foot tall. The seeds are black;not brown as I expect from shepherds purse seeds however?

Could the first one be a tomato, their seeds are well know for surviving and popping up unexpectedly.
