the box

My father in law showed me his new box. It is called "the box" he paid 75 quid for it and he gets all the channels u get on sky for a one off payment. I am aware this is probably a dodgy box has anyone got one? is it legal?

  • If he's getting Sky channels that would normally require a subscription, then yes the box is illegal and your FIL is breaking the law by using it.

Unlikely to be a Sky box, almost certainly connected to cable.

If so, certainly illegal, and if the cable company comes knocking on his door he will be done for theft of services.

Probably is satellite. The courts take a dim view of this. I would recommend staying as far away as possible.

This was mentioned in another post too (the one about the £40 sky world cards), and is just as irrelevant to people reading here as it was there.

That story is about the people selling, NOT the people buying. His FIL is not in the same position as the man selling subscriptions.
  • Are you sure 'the box' is not just the 'Sky pay once watch forever deal' that was out a while back. The likes of Dixons/Currys and Argos were selling it for £75. I'd post the thread but being a new user obviously can't.

After 6 months you have 2 options....
    1. You can upgrade to a Sky TV subscription and pay from £17.50 per month for 1 channel mix or increase your subscription for more channel mixes/sports/movies.
    2. You can just continue with the 200 free channels you have and access to. The Variety and Knowledge mixes will stop.
The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it is!
