Potatoes by the sack

  • we buy these from our nearest farm in romsley (west midlands) £4.00 for 25 kg and I can have great meals for 2 weeks, I can also cook for any unexpected visitors when I have these potatoes.
  • I live in the suburbs and the only "farmers markets" we have are the upmarket-posh-deli type. There is a nursery that sells local produce and their sacks of spuds are circa £5.99 for 25kg. I am suprised you can get 25kg for £2.50 - lucky beggar ;) Their spuds are only really sold like this during the winter months so at the moment am having them off my FIL although due to something eating them I am chucking away more than I can use :(

  • Yep we do this - well the farmer pulls up with a van/trailer load at the side of the road each weekend.

We get 25kg of spuds and 30 free range eggs for £6 - bargain! We usually split the sack of spuds with a friend - you do have to watch them though cos you can occasionally get a sack that goes off fairly quickly (smell nearly as bad as my teenager's trainers lol!) but even allowing for that - still works out far cheaper than the supermarkets etc.

I'm thinking of hunting for a local farm now.

This reminds of a bargain we once had on holiday. Potatoes were then 10p a pound. My parents were debating about buying a sack from a shop. Dad knew the weight of the sack and the shopkeeper duly confirmed it. When he asked the price for the full sack, it went on his shoulder very quickly. Mum moaned we didn't need a sack while dad & I laughed. The shopkeeper had inadvertingly charged dad 5p a pound - of course mum was right we didn't use them all on holiday, we brought them home.
  • My local farmshop is selling 20kg sacks for £4 at the moment. I've a feeling that they were more last year. They are Marfona which are fabulous baked;)

Thank you so much for this thread. We had honestly not thought of doing this.
As soon as I saw it, we went to the only farm shop we could find, in Woodside childrens' farm outside Luton, and got a 25kg bag of spuds for £4.50. Choice of red or white. We got the white, no idea of variety, but they are grand, so they are. Will never buy from supermarket again (unless of course they are end of day ones at a ridiculously low price!!!).

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I bought a 25kg sack last week for a fiver straight from the farm (You'd only get 5kg from Tescos for that kind of money )

Harvested on Wednesday and on my plate on Saturday, can't get much fresher than that
