Potatoes by the sack

Just went out to the garage to fill up my potato bag from the sack and realised that I have never seen it suggested...........
Buy potatoes by the sack from the farm. I pay £2.50 for 25kg of gorgeous fresh spuds. At the moment they are Wilja but later in the year they will be Cara.
Probably I am lucky living in a rural town where the large potato farm still sell these small sacks (for them !) from a shed behind the farmhouse with an honesty box.
I keep one going all through the autumn, winter and early spring. When things get tight jacket spuds and beans is a good standby!

We do the same, like you we live in a rural area where there are lots of farms which sell sacks of potatoes. Only problem can be having somewhere to store a big sack!

394.gif I used to buy my potatoes by the sack twenty odd years ago, and yes they are a great value, these days we don't eat that many potatoes (amazing how your diet changes over the years), so I would never get through a sack today. There are plenty of farm shops around to buy good quality, fresh and good priced veg.
Potato sacks are a great money saving idea if you eat lots of potatoes or have a large family. :)

Asian supermarkets also sell them by the sack I think I paid 2.99 to 3.99 last winter. I kept them in the paper sack in the shed and they lasted weeks. Also when a few went a bit far with sprouting I planted them in the garden - waste not want not!

  • I pass a farm about once a month and I've thought about picking up a sack full, but like meadows we dont eat as many. They'd still work out cheaper than supermarket though, even if I gave some away.

I've always bought potatoes by the sack and its so much cheaper. I don't use as many potatoes now, so share a sack with my dsis. In recent years we've found that they haven't kept so well, probably because of such wet summers; this year they should be better but still wise to keep an eye on them including the ones lower down in the bag. When they start sprouting I just take the sprouts off and use as normal. :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

My mother always did this, go for a nice quite ride in the country and pick up a sack of spuds. I think she always went to the same farm but took various scenic routes to get there. In winter she often kept a sack in the boot of the car 'cos someone told her it helped with the traction when it was icy or snowy, don't know if that's true though, but they were a damn nuisance when she took me to the supermarket shopping, half my bags would end up on the back seat.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
  • We always had them when I was a kid and the huge spiders that used to be in the sack have put me off for life. Any ideas how to stop them, we thought we had bent the top of the sack back over to stop them?
