Anyone else been caught out by the notice period when cancelling Orange?

  • I moved house in July, I gave my 30 days notice to cancel in June and requested my MAC code. After I moved house I had to wait another 2 weeks before my BT line was activated. Orange then sent a letter to my old address stating that they couldn't provide a MAC code because my line was no longer active (probably because I was no longer living at that address.) As far as I was concerned my account was now closed. They still took payment for July as expected and one more payment in August. As it was only a fiver I didn't say anything and just cancelled the direct debit. I heard nothing more from orange.
Once my new line was connected at the new property I then joined Sky broadband and have been fine ever since. Today I received a call from Orange telling me I owe them £15 in arrears and a £24 disconnection fee because I never used a Mac code (the MAC code they never gave me). I don't understand. Do I have grounds for complaint.

Why did you request a Mac Code if you were moving house?

The Mac Code works only on the telephone line your broadband is on. If you move house, you wont have that telephone line at your new property.

Also, requesting a Mac Code wont close your account if it's not used by a new provider.

I think you've misunderstood what Mac Codes are for.

BTW, you cant request 30 days notice and a Mac Code at the same time.

You can complain if you wish, but it's pointless given the information you've provided in your post.
