I wasn't on the Electoral Roll but I was able to get a credit card with Halifax, Flybe, Capital One and Vanquis. So it may not always be because of that reason.
Perhaps, not the sole reason, but why put yourself at a disadvantage?

Basically, lenders like stability. Being with the same employer, bank and current address for a while, all help when applying for credit, but only data that can be independently corroborated is used for credit scoring purposes. That's why it pays to get on the electoral roll as soon as possible after you move to a new address. It's free after all and everyone's credit rating improves no end once registered.

Anybody interested in applying for market-leading cards, should make this their number one priority.

Please note: your name cannot be added to the ER retrospectively. If you enroll now, public records will show that you've lived at your current address since at least December 2009.

  • Looks like I'll need to take the 1.2% monthly interest then unil I'm on the ER, unless anyone can advise anything else?
  • Is it worth giving Capital One a shot or should I lie low and wait until I'm on the ER?

I'm afraid you've got no chance if you're not on the Electoral Roll matey.

I guess not the news you wanted, but true nonetheless.

Not true. I've had about 10 credit cards over the past five years and only discovered recently that I wasn't registered on the electoral roll (or rather I was, but under my married name, whereas all finance is done in maiden name so they couldn't find me). It certainly helps to be on the roll but it's not automatic rejection if you're not.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that this depends on the lender and possibly the particular deal on offer.

Some market-leading deals are heavily advertised and due to the sheer volume of applications received, lenders routinely reject applicants whose identity cannot be verified electronically, simply because requesting ID docs to prove an applicant's identity takes up far more staff time.

Lakesmeare, your recent move would have temporarily disrupted your credit rating too, unfortunately.

If I were you, I'd contact Barclaycard and see what card services can do. B'card has a reputation for regular, follow-on offers, which you can use to your advantage, if your balance is paid off in full.

Btw, If you ring Card Services on 01604 230230 during office hours, you'll avoid the perishing 0870/0844 numbers and, with luck, the overseas call centre ;)
