Help - Turned down by Halifax

The plan was to ransfer £4600 on my A & L (MBNA) card ono a Halifax 13 month 0% deal but I've just been declined and need to find a quick alernative. Any advice on where I should turn to? I have a Barclaycard platinum but he 0% has expired on this. Should I call them and see if they'll do a deal on a new BT or should I opt for another card?

  • Depends on what your credit rating is like tbh - any idea?

Halifax is not known to score particularly harshly. Have you looked at credit files lately to see what's on there? Mistakes happen. For help, see page 1 of the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.

For tips to improve your chances of credit card acceptance, have a look at the *Credit Rating: how it works and how to improve it guide*, especially Martin's *Manage and Improve your credit score* article ;)

  • I've now checked my credit files. Everything seems to be in order. The only issues I can think are that I have recently moved house and am not yet on the ER for the new address. I've also paid off 2 credi cards in full in past 2 months.

Any advice appreciated - I need to pay the balance off of the A & L card asap. Am I more likely to be approved for a LOB card than a 0% deal?

    Thanks!
  • I'm afraid you've got no chance if you're not on the Electoral Roll matey.

I guess not the news you wanted, but true nonetheless.

I wasn't on the Electoral Roll but I was able to get a credit card with Halifax, Flybe, Capital One and Vanquis. So it may not always be because of that reason.

  • Any idea how long it takes to get on the ER? I'm sending my form off today... BTW I am on the ER for my former address, where I lived for 5 years up until 2 months ago.

Getting onto the ER depends on your local council I guess. It could take upto 2 months for the information to be added to your credit file once your on the ER.

Because of the sheer volume of applications received, lenders routinely reject applicants whose identity cannot be verified electronically via the credit reference agencies, which in turn collate data from public records such as the electoral register. If you're not on the electoral roll at your current address, you'll struggle to get any credit.

Had you enrolled last month, your details would have appeared on 1 September 2009. Unfortunately, the next update is not published until 1 December 2009. (The delay is due to the borough-wide annual audits that take place at this time of year.)

Once registered, you may want to contact the electoral services department of your local council on 1 December, to ask when the credit reference agencies are next updated, as frequency varies between boroughs. Then check your electoral status is correctly recorded on credit files at your current address before you apply for a new credit card.

Btw, the CRAs seem happy to answer questions over the phone if you quote your reference number. So if, for instance, you wanted to check that a particular item, such as electoral status, had since been updated, there's no need to order further copies of your
    credit reports ;)

FYI, and anyone else reading, the period before new entries/amendments are added to the electoral roll varies during the calendar year.

It's possible to enrol each month from early December until mid-August, using the rolling register procedure. Unfortunately, there's a blind spot from mid-August till mid-October. This is because borough-wide audits are undertaken annually in August. Additions made now will not appear on the ER until 1 December 2009.
