Real Nappies (Merged Discussion Thread)

:hello: :hello:
I use terry squares on my 3month old daughter. We've got some of the fancy shaped ones and all the otherkinds you can buy but I mush prefer the terry squares. Not had a single leak so far with them and they can be folded in so many ways depending onboy/girl, weaned/unweaned, newborn/older baby.
we don't soak but dry pail with a little tea tree oil on a cotton bud taped to the lid of the bucket. Haven't costed moneywise but time is only about an extra 20mins a 2-3 times a week in loading/unloading washing machine, pegging out etc. I don't tumble dry (haven't got one!)
Have got hooked so much on 'real' nappies I've become a nappy agent to do demos for people to try to convert them to the wonders of nappies!:D0 -
I used terry nappies on all four of my children (twins 19 yrs, 15yr & 14 yr) and only used disaposable nappies for my last daughter when we were on holiday. (I felt that was my luxury then lol).
I would feel awful just throwing nappies away everyday (have this image of a huge pile of dirty nappies on a landfill site)
A little sad i suppose but I loved seeing a line of clean white nappies blowing on the line on a windy sunny day.0 -
My mum used the square terries on me mostly through choice but with the other one of i was allergic to disposables, anyway they are still in use today 23 years on as she swears by them for cleaning the windows as they are lint free and come up beautifully in the washing machine!
Now thats a lot or re-use!0 -
The same set of terry squares has been used for each of my kids (10, 8, 6 and 2). They must have been worn hundreds of times each and are still being put to good use as floorcloths, window and mirror cloths and lots more!
I like terries as they can be folded to fit different size babies and they dry much quicker than "Kooshies" type nappies (although I know these have a lot of fans too.)
I agree it is somehow satisfying to see them flapping on the washing line.
I didn't find the washing routine for terries any extra hardship, after all, when you've got a new baby, they get sick and poo on so many clothes - so it's no bother to chuck a few nappies in the washer with them."By not unsettling men, you will reassure them. By unsettling men either through timidity or malice, you are always compelled to keep a knife in hand." - Niccolo Machiavelli, 1469-15270 -
I don't use terry squares (although I know they are still very popular with a lot of people), but use all different types of shaped cloth nappies on my very-nearly-two year old.
On the odd occasion when we do have to use disposables, I can't bear the smell of them (and that's even before they have been used!) and the thought of them sitting in the bin for a week and then in landfill for umpteen years.
Evilwitch - that is such a great idea about taping a cotton pad with the tea tree oil on the lid of the nappy bucket! I can't be bothered to soak, but sometimes it would be nice to have a more 'refreshing' smell when I lift the lid.
I also became an agent because I am so committed to them! Snap!0 -
i used terry nappies for my dd. they are still going strong as cloths for cleaning etc, but i used to love to see them in rows on the washing line. never used a disposable, even for going out, and when she was born i even had them with me for use in hospital which the staff weren't too happy about, and i sent them home for washing. i too hate the thought of them sitting in landfill for years.£2 saver club 30th sept 198 £2 coins = £396(£350 banked)0

I did read somewhere on here that theres some new nappy liners that can be put in the wormery, so they dont even need to waste the water & detergent for washing. Not sure where though.
Lots of good stuff here as well to nose at http://www.wen.org.uk/nappies/index.htm:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
We use Terry squares on DS lots of positive comments from other people.
I get great satisfaction from seeing them on the line.
We use reuseable fleece liners.
Like wishingonastar we used them from day one, our hospital staff were not phased at all.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

We are hoping to start a family next year and have been wondering about using real nappies but where do you buy them from and which are the best ?
Can anyone estimate the initail cost of getting enuff nappies etc to start with ? Also how many nappies would you need for one baby ?
I am very concerned about the enviroment and what effect all these disposable nappies are/will have on it. But I am also aware of how convinient they are and that real nappies have to also be convinenet to use. From what I have read above you seem to be saying they are."The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
I've started researching nuseries now, and all five that I've visited seemed quite happy to use reusable nappies. They do just bundle them up, poo and all, for the mum to deal with afterwards though - but apparently that's down to regulations rather than their preference; I gather that childminders have more flexibility and have the option of dealing with the nappy much as you would at home (i.e. flushing the poo down the loo before bundling the nappy up).
They all say that they'll follow whatever routine you have established at home, but I don't imagine that that extends to doing EC!0
