car & cheap insurance?

My son is 18 yrs, lives at home with us but has a 9 week old daughter. He holds a provisional licence at the moment, but is hoping to take his test as soon as he can. He is looking to purchase a 2nd hand car, which my other half could take him out in to improve his driving skills. Could anyone advise as to which model of car he should go for and cheap insurance companies?
Cheers

Not anything that a boy racer would have....
His insurance is going to be quite expensive whatever car he gets though.
Mines a 1991 ford fiesta and third party lowest I could get was £1500.0 -
Car, Insurance and teenager...cheap will not come anywhere in the sentance I'm afraid!!!
My daughter wrote her car off last year, she was just coming up to 4 years no claims too, so was back down to 1 years no claims. We were panicking cos the insurance wanted a fortune when it was time to renew, it was expected but still a shock!!
However I am with Churchill insurance and enquired about adding her on a multicar policy! It was certainly a lot cheaper going down that route.

The quotes I have had so far are in excess of £2100 Third Party, and thats for a N Reg polo (it is however 1.4) but the car itself is only worth £300.0

Try DirectLine.
But yeh you won't get under £1k for insurance, even if the car is worth only £300.0 -
If he lives at home with you and your o/h, put the insurance policy in one of your names and put your son as a named driver. This will slash the cost considerably.Come ride with me, through the veins of history...

But is also illegal if he is the main driver of the car. It is called fronting.
Has been discussed many times in the insurance section of this site.0 -
If she's looking at third party surely she should be able to find one for less than £1k.Try DirectLine.

@OP
For student insurance I'd look at Endsleigh and Elephant. Mine was around £700 from Endsleigh with another driver on - fully comp for a Toyota Yaris 1.3 T3 although it wasn't my first car. My most recent insurance was about £500.
Also if you're even considering anything higher than 1.0 when it's his first year of driving you're almost begging for high insurance. I had a nissan micra, X reg. VW Polo 1.4 screams boy racer regardless of how old it is.0 -

Its for her SON - which makes all the difference.
£700, for an 18year old male? Unless you're driving a bike you rarely (not impossible, but I haven't seen it) get less than £1k.0 -
I'm well aware of that but the difference in price between my insurance the first year (around £1k) and that of my male friends was about £300-400 at most. As we all had fully comp I find it highly unlikely that third party wouldn't be less than £1k.Its for her SON - which makes all the difference.

£700 was the price when I was 19 and I'm a female.0 -

Why? The reason insurance is high is because of you hitting others car, not damage to your own. When quoting I have found very little difference between thirds party and fully comp.
Mine has gone from:
£1500
£1200 (I had an accident in first year)
£6700
