wind turbine plans!

  • The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales have a good selection of information sheets etc and have done quite extensive trials on different turbines. I think they also offer a DIY sheet. Try http://www.cat.org.uk
  • Looked into this ourselves earlier this year. We were advised that they should not be attached to buildings as the vibrations from them spinning in high winds can cause structural damage to the property! One to check out! Good luck with your project.

As I've mentioned before on other threads, http://www.navitron.org.uk have pretty cheap turbines. They supplied the ones that were fitted to the house in the show.
  • They are another possibly - but reading the literature - and looking between the lines.. it will take more than like the 10 years to recoup the investment.

Cost is £1500 + 5% VAT. (with possible 30% grant)
Only seems worth it if you have higher than avg. winds - parts of scotland and the south east - cornwall.

I am really interested in the possibility of self power, wind or solar etc but how do you connect your generated supply to the national grid? Sorry if this is a basic question but I have to start somewhere:)

I live in the scottish highlands and have heard this week about new grants available for turbines and solar cells. Does anyone know any more?

Will - I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you wire the turbine up to your house right your electricity meter will literally roll back. Not sure if this is true though!

Yes it will, but you're not allowed to do that - I think because they don't want to give you as much for your electricity as you give them for theirs!
