Help with Business Electricity

Options
Hi

My mum and dad's business electricity is up for renewal on 21/12/2009. They had been on a 1 year fix with British Gas. British Gas have sent through the renewal which is a 2 year fix. They have quoted standing charge of 58.100 p/day and Unit Charge of 14.680 p/k Wh.

It says I need to let them know by 22/09/2009 otherwise it will automatically renew. Mum and dad don't mind whether they fix or not, or for how long, but any general help or advice would be great. I've no idea whether this is good or not, or if to just let it run with British Gas.

Any advice or suggestions welcomed. PS- Dual Fuel not an option, they are not on mains gas!

Thanks

    Hi Rachel,

These prices certainly seem excessive so there is room for vast improvement.

You need to give notice no later than today and I would advise that you email contract.renewals@centrica.co.uk and inform that that you wish to terminate the account (you can always agree a new contract later if you wish to stay with British Gas Business). You will need to include the account number or Mpan and the supply address.

British Gas should acknowledge termination within a week or so.

In the meantime this gives you the opportunity to obtain prices so please feel free to Private Message your contact details and I will see if we can be of assitance.

Depending on the area you could be looking at a saving of as much as 50%.

  • Ok, rung British Gas and have sent a follow up email to cancel. when ringing up they have offered me different rates. Standing charge of 40.48 per day and unit charge of 8.8 so that has gone down slightly but still sounds alot to me. This is for a 12 month contract. Quite happy to go on longer contract, what do people think?

hi rachelandgrommit i take it its not economy 7, prices vary according to region do you know what region it comes under.?
  • The second quote BG gave you seems not to bad it is roughly 7 pence a unit cheaper.

  • Er, not too sure on region but parents are in Stoke on Trent. I haven't got any other prices yet so I.ve no idea how this compares or how long I should fix for? Should they fix for longer than 12 months. Is there any way of doing a comparison as most sites don.t do comparison for business use.
  • If you go for longer than 12 months you will find the price will be between 5-10% higher for 24mth contracts and higher again for even longer term. At the moment there's no reason to go longer than 12 months unless you want the additional peace of mind.

The market has been pretty stable this year.

British Gas have dropped the price by 7p just by calling to cancel the contract. Thats more than £2000 over the year and just shows you how much they try and rip people off by.

We would be able to get this closer to 7.5p so I wouldn't agree with British Gas yet.

Any reason BusinessEnergyBroker you feel the rules dont apply to you regarding touting for business. I note you have asked several times recently for people to PM as in post 2 and this thread yesterday too

We may be able to beat the offer that you have from Total Energy so feel free to PM me if you decide that you would like to transfer.
  • I am quite happy to shop around for prices myself and not use a broker, but I was wondering if there was a good comparison site to use that lets you get cashback, etc, that you can use for business use?
  • Hi

I'm still looking around and following on from British Gas cancellation, they rung me today 'as a valued customer' as they would like us to look at them when we are up for renewal at the end of December. They are now offering 40.48 per day standing charge (same as they offered before) and 7.80 per kw hr, which is slightly less than before. They are offering this on either a 1 or 2 year fix. Is this tempting as a 2 year fix?

    Thanks
