dont feel guilty about it, CTC, who would it have benefited if the food had gone to the tip? it would just have been a terrible waste wouldnt it? I think the bloke who usually takes it to the tip should be the one feeling guilty!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Honestly, I'm one of the people who would find it weird and would laugh about it. I'd think it a sin to take it to the tip, but I'd find it odd to take it myself. I'd donate it to a shelter or something similar.0

when we emptied my mums house we shared the food out too! Maybe a bit bizarre but why throw away perfectly good food - I wouldn't have told them ! LOL!!

What on EARTH difference does it make if the food came from a dead person's house. Did he die from eating it? If you knew that the person who packed your Tesco's chicken had been run over by a car on his way home from the factory, would you refuse to eat that?
People are so weird. I work with the elderly, and they are VERY matter of fact about death. When the old lady my mum looked after died, we went to clear her house: there was NOTHING of any value at all. I had her bread knife and her potato peeler and I'm still using them ten years later. My mum chucked the perishable food that was out of date and took everything else in her cupboards home. The lady concerned had been a nurse in the days when nursing was like being a nun; she had never married, had cared for people all her life and eked out a tiny pension. She had made every penny count and had left the money for her funeral in a sports bag under her bed so that no-one would have anything to pay after her death. If we had thrown her food away she would have been horrified that her careful housekeeping had been wasted.
Ignore them! Someone admired my husband's jacket the other day and he said, yes, it was my dad's. That person was then horrified that he was wearing his dead father's jacket  Makes you wonder whether they'd be so horrified if they inherited a house...0 -
I wouldn't want to see it wasted either, but I'd feel uncomfortable about personally benefiting too! If I couldn't find a home for it, I'd probably keep it and stick a donation in a charity box, I think, but then I can't bring myself to keep money I find in the street either!
I don't think there's a right or a wrong here CBC, just do what you feel OK with! It's a crime to waste food!
Hey! Just a thought, do they still make up gift boxes of groceries at schools, churches etc for Harvest Festival? It's that time now, are the tins all in-date? That's the solution that would make me the happiest!!0 -
If it was the house of an older person then they probably belong to a generation that hates to see food wasted. If I died I would much rather someone had use of the food than it ended up in landfill. Perhaps I have been on MSE for too may years!0

If you feel so guilty it would make it hard to eat, harvest is coming up and schools and churches often collect and give to homeless shelters etc. I don't think you should feel one iota of guilt. I'm sure most elderly people would be appalled if it was wasted.0

I think guilt is a modern plague; we all feel guilty about so much more than (I am sure) our ancestors did. I can see nothing wrong with you sensibly not letting the food go to waste, and I bet its former owner wouldn't have had a problem either. Good for you !0

aw, when my gran died and I cleaned out her house I kept the tins she had in, she would have been mad at me f I'd have thrown them out, she was very OS too!! I didn't tell anyone though I just put them in my cuboards, maybe just keep it quiet in future so you dont feel akward - I dont see anything wrong with it at all xBest Threads -

thanks for all the replies...
my business deals with textiles, so i handle and deal with alot of dead people's clothes etc, and some times it makes me sooooooo sad that the relatives etc have just disregarded them, some are vintage, and have been loving kept by the owner, and some things are brand new with tags..
they even throw out the brand new socks and pants etc, which to me could have been kept by a family member.
the person that made the comment lives with their parents. so i dont think they really know the meaning of budgeting etc, they are part of todays 'throw-away' generation...
all the food is still in the black bag, that i brought it home in, so after my cuppa, i will go and see exactly what i got, and put it in my cupboards..
the lady was in here late 80's with no immediate family, and as someone posted, she was of the generation of watching the pennies and having njo waste.
so i would imagine she wouldnt mind me having her food instead of it being thrown away.Work to live= not live to work0
