i feel a bit guilty now, but would you do it?

with my work, i deal with house clearance firms, and this week, i went to a house that was being cleared, to get items related to my work, anyway when i was there the house cleance guy showed me round the house, and we went to the kitchen and as i was having a nose in the kitchen cupboards, i asked what he done with the food ( tinned stuff) and he said he normally takes it to the tip:eek:, so i asked if i could have it,

so i did,

when i told people in work, they all cringed and said how could i eat a dead persons food:cool:, so now i am feeling a bit guilty.

there are about 20 tins in all ranging from a tin of blacberries, spam, corned beef, tinned veg and a tin of cat food.

what would you do?

one part of me is thinking it would be a waste for it to have been put in a skip,

then i feel the only reason why i got these tins of food, is because of someone dying..

If you're really feeling guilty, you could try passing it all to somebody you know who could benefit from it OR give it to a soup kitchen place who may be able to feed people on the streets with it.

Local Cats Protection League, or PDSA may be grateful for the cat food.
  • Ah don't worry about it. Had you murdered him, just to empty his cupboards, then I would worry. Waste not want not - enjoy!

  • well my cats will injoy the cat food,

to be honest i was fine with the idea, and thought ooooo totally os not letting food go to waste, even other people's ...lol...

but its suprising just a few words said, even if it was said as a bit of a micky take, can make you feel a bit guilty.

the house clearance guy said if he remembers, he will save the food for me...

  • I don't see what's wrong with it. Personally, I'm too easily embarressed to have asked in the first place, but I don't think it's wrong for you to have done it. You're right, it's shameful for it to end up in the skip, and wouldn't the dead person have been p'ed off to think their hard earned stuff was just being chucked - especially the Cat food?

Maybe next time you just don't tell your colleagues, and if you really feel bad about it, give some money to the Cat's Protection League or something, that's probably what a cat owner would appreciate. Don't beat yourself up over it, you never stole it, and you saved some valuable resources being wasted.

  • I wouldn`t feel guilty, as someone else suggested you could make a small donation to charity. I am sure most (deceased) people would rather think of their stuff being used than chucked on the tip. I would only draw the line if it came from house that needed a visit from Kim & Aggie :D

Honestly, I wouldnt have a problem with it. I really don't see how its any different to when people donate deceased peoples clothes to charity shops. Its not like they are going use it ;) and really I think its a real shame that food etc would be binned just because some people think being dead is catching.

  • Well, I make no secret of my views on wasting food: I refuse to do so, as long as there is one other person in the world, suffering or dying from lack of it. Except quinoa.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Hi, Thoose emotions again :o we all have thoose. It would be a MSE waste to put tinned food in the bin, so it has to be eaten. In a house contents sale everything is disposed of. Some one will buy the second hand furniture. You would be doing good to help out with the food, some you could eat yourselfs and things you are not keen on donated or passed on to deserving families. Folk are very quick with a forked tonge, tell them you are going to give to the needy and they will soon have a change of heart.
