Is an unchangeable flight really non-changeable?

For the OP, I would closely examine the fare rules for your ticket, it may be possible to change your ticket for far far less than the cost of a full flex, full ref ticket. In fact, it's usually the case.
I think the key thing here is don't even give up if you read the rules yourself and see 'no changes' - give the airlines a call whatever your fare rules appear to say. Worst they can do is say no!0 -
You should be able to claim your taxes back, subject to an admin fee, which can actually amount to a large sum. E.g in the recent BA Sale £299 return NYC, approx £120 was taxes, £110 fuel surcharge, the remainder was the ticket.0

Yeah I know the problem. I accidentally choose the wrong lotto numbers last night!0 -
Have you asked the airline yet?0

My problem with airline companys is that whislt they will not let you change your flights, they are quiet happy to change their schedules and flight times or even cancel flights and inconvience you and others.0

Which airline? What class is it booked in? (Q, W, X etc.) What is the destination?RIP independent MSE.

If the airline imposes a significant involuntary change to the scheduling, they may allow change for free*
*KLM certainly do.0
