Ive heard that the biodegradable bages give off C02 so will still be damaging the planet and adding to the greenhouse gasses, im not expert but read it somewhere recently.
  • I've found a similar statement on this site

Now completely stuck as to what I use for bin bags! We haven't got a bin in the kitchen (no space) so it's a recycled carrier bag hanging off the door. However if I'm going to be using study shopping bags instead I won't have the carrier bags to recycle. Apparently plastics bags are bad, paper bags are bad and so are biodegradeable.

Well yes, that's fairly likely, but fairly obvious when you think that the material doesn't just disappear, but decays in a chemical reaction with bi-products. The only reason why conventional ones don't give off CO2 is that they remain in their vigin state for ever, locked in landfill sites. You pays your money... so best not use plastic bags at all.

I take a freezer bag, thick shopping bag and a fold up crate with me whenever I go to the supermarket(once a week).During the week ,I carry a back pack.We have one of those plastic bag saver racks in the kitchen, when OH or the kids buy something in a carrier, they automatically put the bag in the rack.I use them in the waste bins.
The only person who has taken offence at my not wanting a carrier recently ,has been a lady working in the charity shop.
I said "No thanks I dont need a bag as Ive got the back pack" and she said "well Im determined to give you a bag anyway" and continued to pack my purchase into one with an 'I know better than you' sort of expression.

i hate it when they pack it for you, i hate it even more when they insist on packing it into a bag, but the thing is the shops pay for the bags

That's astonishing behaviour. I'd have waited until she had packed it all then walked out of the shop and left it on the counter without paying. I think it's worth writing to the head office of the charity concerned.

I use Jute bags for my shopping great for putting all sorts of heavy things in and I have the foldy plastic crates in the car too. Just hoping to be able to shop at markets when I get back to Scotland and then I won't be pestered about carrier bags!!

Yes I know ,wierd isn't she? She is the same lady who on another occassion was advising somebody that the Pasta maker they had for sale would be dishwashable even though I know you cant even get them wet(which I did rather nosily point out :p ).
