Say NO to plastic bags

Every shop you purchase goods from wants to give you a plastic bag to put it in. Now that’s not eco friendly is it?
I say, where ever possible, NO to plastic bags. In many cases its totally unnecessary. Let not fill up the our countryside with plastic.
What say you?

I agree - I always carry a bag with me, usually a hemp or linen one, or if i'm doing serious shopping, big reusable ones from TK MAxx or M and S :D

Oh I agree completely. One thing that stuns me is the attitude of some staff when you turn a bag down. I've had all kinds of huffs and puffs from some staff just because they have already brought a bag up onto the counter!
  • In Morrisons, staff usually start packing my stuff into bags uninvited even when they can see I've brought my shopping trolley with me, and they put squashy stuff and heavy stuff in the same bag, which I then have to unpack to repack properly. Occasionally I've asked them not to pack the bags and thay've gone ahead anyway, apparently not having heard me, or they've asked if I'd like help to pack my bags, I've said no thanks, and they've then decided that if I'm still packing by the time they've given me my change, they can't possibly just wait till I've finished, they need to put my remaining shopping into unwanted carrier bags.
Most charity shops I go to will ask if I would like my purchases in a bag, especially if they can see I have a bag or trolley with me which has room in it.

Yep, I'm going to get one of those bags-for-life and keep it with me all the while.

I'll have to do that because I know I'll leave it at home

I was in Tony's Textiles not long back to buy a throw for the setee.
The assistant went to put it in one of their bright orange bags but I said that I didn't want one because I had a bag of my own. She told me that I had to have a Tony's bag. I said that I didn't want one, again, and she said that I must have one otherwise she would get into trouble from her manager. This went on for quite a while, until I said that I wasn't going to pollute the environment any further just because her manager wanted me to advertise their shop whilst I walked around town. But if they were willing to pay me to do their advertising for them then that would be another matter (being a good MSE that I am) I eventually got out of the shop with my own bag, although furious by that stage.

At the moment I say 'yes' to plastic bags. I used to buy special plastic bin liners for the kitchen and bathroom bins. Now I use old supermarket bags as bin liners. By doing this I'm saving money and have reduced wastage. However, I'm open to suggestions if anyone can think of a greener alternative for bin liners.

Ooh this is my pet hate too - I have a couple of small bags that fold up and zip into a small pouch. Got them from h&m's, I can usually fold a tesco bag for life into it too.

If I buy veg from any supermarket and don't put it into a bag the person on checkout always asks if I need a bag to put it in! (If I wanted one I would have put it in one!)

I try not to get too many pre-packed foods for the same reason, but if you do your main shop at a supermarket, there's not always that choice.

I can't really think of an alternative, but our bin is too big for carrier bags, which does annoy me, I must admit.
