The annoying thing is companies (and customers) don't think about the value of the bag in any other terms than purchase price.

They should be thinking about the cost of using up non-renewable resourses, the production pollution costs, the landfill costs, and the cost to the 90+% of birds thought to have plastic bags in their stomachs...

These plastic bags cost a lot more than 1p if you can think beyond terms of money. Bring on the bag tax!

i dont know if its been mentioned but i cam across a very handy bag, it folds up so it could into a pocket or you can just carry it in your hand, i wouldnt say you could get a huge amount in, but then it depends on what your buying, i found it in the sainsburys store at swindon(the one at stratton) yesterday and it cost 75p which is pretty good

    just thought id mention it

Terry Leahy was on the news yesterday voicing out against the introduction of a green tax on plastic bags.

I certainly don't notice anything biodegradeable about Tesco bags, the news item says it will roll out in 2004! I have a tesco bag outside my back door in the wet, it has been there fore a couple of months, and is still as strong as the day it was brought back from Tesco.

The reason I posted the above was because in yesterdays paper I noticed an article saying the same thing about the bags and also that they will be running the stores more environmentally friendly (thermal heating etc!) but couldn't find an online version of that!

    Argh plastic bags!

I've gone into a certain high street chemsit for dental floss and had a bag practically forced on me even though I had half a dozen already (all half empty)

I wouldn't like to see us go down Ireland's route.

What would be good is if we put a BIG tax on branded bags - with plain ones exempt.

Lets see if shops are so fast to throw bags at us if we aren't being used as walking advertiesments! :D

    Word of caution....

If you don't take a bag, make sure you keep your receipt, or you could be accused of being one of the major non plastic bag supermarket users

But that would only stop shops from forcing you to take bags - it wouldn't encourage the customer to refuse them, and that is the only thing that's going to reduce their use to a large extent.

Wow, this thread is really cooking now.....

How about plastic packaging that is totally unnecessary.
Like Easter Eggs. My daughter was bought 10 Easter eggs (yummy!).;)
After I took off all the plastic packaging I was left with 1 third eggs 2 thirds unrecyclable plastic.
What a complete waste……why cant they package with card/paper. At least that’s recyclable.
Wake up chocolate egg companies, what sort of example are you teaching out kids…….
