Say NO to plastic bags

Must depend on the branch, perhaps. My local branch doesn't have a problem with you using your own bags. Having said that, I don't give them a choice, I just say "I don't need a bag thanks" and put the items in my own bag! Never had a problem with that approach.0

My Tesco till person used my bags for life yesterday. Any surplus bags I save and then pass on to my DIL's mother for her local shop.0

My pet hate is those thin plastic bags that you are supposed to put 1 or 2 carrots in. I use Sainsburys bags for life, and put my loose veg in them, and as I do scan and pack, I stick the weighing sticker to the veg themselves. I guess a more environmental thing would be not to take the sticker either. But I could recycle them as they are paper....ho hum... Does make rescans interesting though, when your onion sticker has stuck itself to your carrots etc.

I'm working my way through the thread, so this may be a repost, but I use fruit and vegetable bags for putting sandwiches in, etc - like we would use freezer/food storage bags. They come in very handy.
I must make myself a fabric bag - add it to my list of projects.0 -
Today i got my clubcard statement through and one of the little extras was a voucher for a free bag for life, now i know they barely cost anything but a penny saved and all that LOL.Success means having to worry about every thing in the world......EXCEPT MONEY. Johnny Cash

Went into Home Bargains today and they have black bags for sale at 49p. They look quite strong and I think they are made of recylced material.0

Although I reuse carrier bags as bin bags I don't get through many living on my own, so I got a string bag from here
http://www.incensed.wahmall.co.uk/traderplus/shop_top.php
It is pink and quite cool looking with long handles that can be used to sling over your shoulder. About three people have commented on it positively. I also just give checkout people a big smile and say "Oh thanks, but I don't need another bag" and have never had a problem.
If they do look at me askance I will just make some light comment about how they are taking over my kitchen (which they were, before the string bag, because I couldn't use them fast enough and wouldn't bin them!)0 -
Big full page advert in yesterdays Mirror newspaper saying that by September (?) they will only supply degradeable carrier bags as well as 9 other points they list that will help the environment such as solar power, wind power, recycling, helping local producers etc etc.....
Anyone else see the article / got any thoughts on it?!?!

Just found an article about it, although the actual piece was a full page Tesco paid for ad....
Tesco pledges to build up community links
By Sarah Butler
TESCO promised to consult local communities on every new superstore as the country’s largest supermarket chain fought to improve its image before a two-year investigation into the grocery sector by the competition watchdog.
In a speech at The Work Foundation in London yesterday, Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco’s chief executive, revealed a number of measures designed to build links with local communities.
He said: “The battle to win customers in the 21st century will increasingly be fought not just on value, choice and convenience but on being good neighbours, being active in communities, seizing the environmental challenges, and on behaving responsibly, fairly and honestly.”
The speech comes as Tesco, which controls more than 30 per cent of the UK grocery market, faces rising criticism from environmental and community groups.
Sir Terry said that Tesco would “proactively” consult local communities before every new superstore opening and reduce the frequency of deliveries to its convenience stores to cut congestion. He said that Tesco wanted to be a “better neighbour”, with a number of other initiatives including making all its carrier bags biodegradeable by September and cutting the use of plastic bags by 25 per cent over the next two years.

If you get a bag for life from Tesco, they'll replace it when it wears out.mah_jong wrote:I had a bag for life till it wore out! Did not last that long to be honest.
I have to say, I get quite bolshy with the assistants if they insist on giving me a bag. I take the goods out and put them in my own bag, then give the shop's bag back to the assistant, smile and walk away without a word. It's incredibly annoying!mah_jong wrote:In Primark, I (as always) said, can I just put these items into my bag? I was told quite abruptly that i HAD to take thier bags. I was too rushed to take the point any further.
Are there other shops that refuse to let you put in your shopping that you paid for, to be put in your own bags??
