moving into a new home - utility supplies

Hi,

Can someone tell me what happens with utilities once a house is sold, sale completed, seller moved out and buyer moving in.
I've heard that some houses get disconnected whilst others carry on a deemed contract without disconnection.

Is there anything a buyer can do via solicitors to sort this without being disconnected?

With repossessed properties, all utilities are usually switched off/disconnected long before the sale so you start from scratch.

With owner/occupier sales, disconnections are unusual.

Once you have Exchanged contracts and know your completion date, just contact the suppliers direct and arrange to take over the supply.

Don't forget to take a meter reading on the day you move in or you might end up paying for the vendor's electricity!
