Best Mob for Apps, Internet....and calls!

Any views please on which phone (not i-phone...too expensive) for internet and applications, and GPS? Looking at Nokia 5800, but it seems a bit geared towards music, which I would not need?

Ta.

  • IPhone and the android phones like HTC Magic and Hero are good for apps. I used to buy phones for apps like nokia 6600, 6680 then the N95 8GB. But Nokia tightened up the operating system to much so i stopped bothering. There are a fair few out there for the 5800, but IPhone and android phones are geared more towards it.
    I have a 5800 myself

  • Thanks. What does the term 'android' phones mean please?

Android is the operating system, it is developed by Google and is open source i believe as well.
Symbian is the Nokia version. Originally developed by several companies but Nokia has a larger holder in the companies that made it now. The 5800 is the 5th edition of the operating system. N95 8Gb was 3rd edition, and the 6600 (my personal fav for apps) was the 1st edition.

Here is the android phone list, as its open source the mobile companies can modify it as they see fit - http://www.topandroidphones.com/android-phone-list/
HTC handsets, Magic and Hero seem to take most of the limelight for android thus far. Personally i do not like the size of the HTC handsets, very long and have a 'kink' at the bottom of the handset.
I advise you go into 02 and try the IPhone, then goto another shop try the 5800, HTC Magic & Hero.

The kink, or chin as some people put it, looks greatly exaggerated in the pictures compared to the phone in reality. I find the Hero alot more ergonomic than the iphone as a result of the kink, as the mic is angled towards your mouth. The Hero is also feels nicer to hold than an iphone against the side of your face, as well as in the hand (the teflon is so soft :p).

It is definitely more pocketable than an iphone, although the 5800 is narrower than both.

The Iphone has the most comprehensive app market, although you will find that the android market isn't really lacking in any areas, and in fact is easier to navigate. I believe in 6 months time to a year, the android market will top the apple market due to the open source nature of it and the steadily increasing popularity of the android platform. The games on the apple market are obviously better in terms graphics than androids as the iphone has a dedicated graphics processor compared to the integrated one android phones).

You will also find more useful 'free apps' on the android market, unless ofcourse you 'jailbreak' your iphone.

If I was to weigh up cost, benefit and functionality, I would be inclined to recommend the HTC Hero (or pretty much any of the new android handsets that are hitting the market very soon).
Try to imagine nothing ever existed...
  • I asked this question a few weeks ago and after trying both the Hero and iphone 3gs instore, decided on the iphone. Don't get me wrong, the Hero is a brilliant phone but it just doesn't have the same class as the iphone....i would say the iphone is a better all-rounder. Yes the iphone is expensive starting at £440 but remember its a mini-computer so IMHO its worth every penny. I strongly recommend you go instore to play with both devices before deciding. Whichever you decide to buy, you won't be disappointed as they're both excellent devices. Here's some screenshots of my iphone 3gs demonstrating its graphic capabilities:
