Do UPVC doors have to have such high thresholds?

I cannot STAND the fact that I have to 'step over' the threshold at the front and back doors, we also have a ridiculous step situation leading out of the back, so i have to step over the threshold, then angle my foot on the thin narrow step, then step down onto the floor,,,, rubbish
is there anything i can ask for when i have people round to give me quotes?

'Can you fit a low threshold door please?'

yes,,,, but i want it flat, like a threshold on a wooden door, is that possible?0

They'll have to fit the new door, then jack the rest of the house up.0

I would think this has something to do with the fact that a PVC door comes with the frame and the way its fitted means its proud of the original floor level... Some manufacturers make them with a low threshold especially for the disabled which means you can wheel a wheelchair over them easily but I imagine they are more expensive..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Even if it's a higher treshold door you could drop the brickwork outside to make it flush. And order a bigger door.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

bit confused, do you mean raise the brick work up??0

Ask for a threshold suitable for wheelchairs, most companies will fit this and should be able to show you an example0

Our new uPVC front door was a low aluminium threshold one which i specified because we'd had a few people (including me) trip up over the higher threshold of the previous door plus i'm likely to have future needs for more level access. Wasn't charged any extra for it though but whether that's because i said i needed because of mobility probs rather than just wanted it i'm not sure!
One thing i will say though is because of the low threshold the sealing is done slightly differently. With the higher threshold you would have a rubber seal on the piece of upvc going across at the bottom of the threshold. On the low threshold there is nowhere for it to go so instead the seal is attached to the bottom of the door itself and drags over the threshold. It means you feel a slight resistance as the seal goes over the threshold and i'm not convinced the seal is as good as the higher type of threshold.
With your back door a bit of step-widening needed..bricks or concrete (held in place with a timber formwork whilst it dries).
