New Ipod Problems

We have recently purchased an iPod classic (the 160GB) and I am getting myself in a lot of a pickle with it. Where to begin?

I logged on to Apple iTunes on the computer and downloaded the iTunes programme. I had my new iPod connected, and it managed to import the few CD's I had previously put on to my computer to the iPod.

However, it also imported a whole load of files I did not even realise were there, and I now have a load of unwanted files on the iPod along with the music, and do not know how to delete them.

I have also mistakenly set the iPod up (via the initial setup from Apple iTunes site) so it does not import the artwork along with album music, a fact which I now wish to rectify.

Don't know how to go about deleting the unwanted files from the iPod, and also how to get the artwork, so advice required please.

It should also be added that I will eventually wish to transfer my CD library onto the computer and then on to the iPod - what is the programme most suited for the computer to add the CD's to?

Sorry about this, but the more I use the computer and technology in general, the more baffled I get ..... !!

To be honest, I think it might be better to start the whole process all over again, but some advice would be very welcome.

Yes you could simply do a restore on the iPod. That would clear everything out and start again. The iPod does contain system files other than the actual audio files themselves - are you sure those are not the ones you are seeing?

I tried to do a restore on the iPod but it does not appear to have made a difference.

I still have the albums which were put on there, but there are a couple of "albums" under the music section which are untitled and by unknown, and seem to consist of short bursts of sounds such as bees buzzing, football crowd noises, all kinds of noises. It is these I wish to get rid of.

Anyone got any ideas, plus answers to the other questions originally posed?

The only other suggestion I have is to stop using blue text.
  • Shame you don't like it ... I think it's pretty. Thanks for the other bit of advice though, even though it didn't work in the end.

When you install iTunes, it gives you the option to automatically import music from your home folder. You must have selected "yes", which means it added whatever audio files it could find. Just select them and press delete. It'll ask if you want to keep the files on your computer, or whether you want them moved to the recycle bin.

As for the artwork, go to Edit > Preferences > Store and check "Automatically download missing artwork".
  • Thanks, will give it a try when I get the chance - however, how do I delete the files from the iPod?

If you have your iPod set to automatically sync, they'll delete themselves whenever you delete them from your iTunes library and sync your iPod.

If you're manually managing your music (my preferred method of doing it), in iTunes just click Music under your iPod, and select the tracks and delete them as you did previously.

You might find some useful tutorials here and here.

thing to remember is , that Itunes automatically syncs your I Pod , so there is no need to delete stuff off it manually . it is more case of telling I tunes what you want ( and don't want ) syncing . this may sound harder than simply dragging and dropping files onto the Ipod manually , but it is much much easier when you get to grips with your I tunes .

your best bet is to first create a personal playlist of all the music you want on your Ipod . this is will be very helpful if someone else get a ipod in the future , as well or you get a pod shuffle for the gym say . you can have all your music in one libary for multiple ipods , yet only sync the songs you want to each . we have four different ipods and multiple playlist so each one does not end up with all the music on them. creating playlists gives you much greater and easier control of your library and what goes on your Ipod .

when you have done this , connect your Ipod and then click it in I tunes under devices and select music tab in the new Ipod window . uncheck " sync entire music library" and check " sync selected playlists , genres ect " . now simply check the playlist(s) you just created and let the ipod re sync .

when you add new CD's to your Library , simply drag them from into the playlist when they have ripped , and the next time you plug in your Ipod it will sync on to it .

these unwanted files you talk about in your Music library can simply be deleted later , as only syncing t your playlist will not see them end up on your Ipod ( and remove them from it if they are already on there) .

Artwork can be troublesome . using Apples automated "get album Artwork " " feature is a good start , but by no means 100% perfect . if you get Artwork that does not match the album ( this does happen ) or itunes cannot find the Artwork , then manually inserting the artwork is a doddle .

simply selected the album , and the use the "get Info " tab ( i think you can right click to do this in windows , but i use a Mac ) click yes to the warning about editing multiple items . in the info window that appears you will see a space for Album Artwork . you can simply drag and drop a artwork image into here and the this will then be the artwork for the album . All cd Covers ( type into google ) is resource for artwork .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Wow, and thanks loads trets77 - now that's what I call helpful advice!

We finally got to grips with the iPod help menu on their website, and have managed to get rid of all the music files we had put on the iPod (with RealPlayer), and start all over again using iTunes player.

Discovered that the rogue "music" files (which amounted to a couple of thousand very short bursts of all kinds of every day sounds) were already on RealPlayer (not sure how or why) and the iPod had automatically added them when going through the set up procedure. With the help of Marty J we managed to organise the artwork problem but I do take on board what you are saying about wrong artwork.

So far we are just transferring to the computer all the CD's we have and then syncing to the iPod, and I am working on that today.

I use Audiograbber to convert my cds to mp3 then import them.I have lots of tunes in Itunes but its best just to make playlists and switch them in and out though mine is only a littlin 4gb nano.
Ipods Contain folders that are hidden (Windows control panel/folder options)will allow you to make them viewable.Ipod also renames music to 4 or 5 letter number sequence (to help stop copying i guess).
