Part time Student help

Hi all, new to forum.

I was wandering whether anyone knew of any schemes or grants avaiable to a fulltime worker, part time student with regards to funding for books. I am nearly 21yrs old. have a daughter and a mortgage, times are difficult but i could really use these books for the upcoming degree i am taking. I've already had over £60 of books stolen in previous college.

Thanks.

  • Have you applied for a grant to pay for the course fees or aren't you eligible for this?
  • My employer has agreed to fund the degree fee's. ut he hasnt got certified investor in people etc etc. and is not prepared to fund me for any stationary/books etc i would need for the course.

You should be able to apply to your LEA for a part-time grant; it may be dependent on your income and number of hours or number of credits and level though. Worth checking - especially as even though your employer is paying the fees (which again you could possibly have paid by the LEA), better to be as indepenedent as possible.

(This is lifted from The University of Sheffield info so may be typical of others but I admit may be not:
"In addition to the fee grant, part-time students are also eligible to apply to their Local Authority for a course grant for books, travel and other related expenditure. If your gross household income is below £25,509 you may also be eligible for an additional course grant of £260."
This is for 60 credits during the academic year (number of hours not specified), any level above 0.)
  • hey GTC thats really greta thanks for that information. I know this might sound pathetic, but who would i go to with regards to getting this LEA (i know nothing of this sort of thing as ive never done it before) I am studying lvl4 stage and i think i am doing 75 creds this year. and certainly under the 25k mark lol :(

LEA = Local Education Authority. Ask at your local council offices.
  • Ok Older thanks for the help bud. Is there anywhere online you can read up about it? Birmingham city council have a page of requirements to see if u apply etc?
  • Well, I need to correct myself first off: I just called my local LEA (Student Support at local council [RMBC for me]) and was directed to SFE - Student Finance England - who now will also deal with part-time student funding as well (despite the info I had from University of Sheffield). We all know how easy it's going to be to get through to them at the moment - i.e. NOT - so my suggestion for you Frase would be to get in touch with the University with whom you will be studying to see if this applies to your course/no. of units/level etc etc. And, if you want to be on hold for a long time, put in a call to SFE 0845-300-5090.

  • hey GTC, my enrollment was a "15 minute slot per person"......started at 10am finished at 12.30....so yeah i think me uni is gna be as helpful as this other crowd sound like lol. Is there a website that details requirements for this to apply? Like i said, im doing 2 double modules (30 creds each) and a single this year (155 cred) thus 75 credits, it is a 3rd yr PT of 5yr degree so its level 4.
