Satellite dish in conservation area? Planning permission needed?

Not sure if this is the right place for this question.

We have offered on a house that we now know is in a conservation area. There is no satellite dish on the house, and I wondered if we will be able to have one installed (we bought a FreeSat TV back in Feb before we considered moving).

Will we have to get planning permission to get one installed? And if so, are we likely to get it?

I am pretty sure that the dish would be on the back of the house - back garden faces more or less due south.

Hope someone out there knows the answer - otherwise we'll have to drive round and round the area and see what others have done, which might spook our vendor a little if they spot us! ;)

I would drive round the area anyway, to see what you are buying into. Don't think you need PP unless the property is listed.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • If the garden hasn't tall shrubs etc it's possible to have a satellite dish at ground level, and no-one would even know you you had one. I presume you wouldn't need planning permission either, any more than you would for a garden gnome :D.

I live in a conservation area. Neighbour has put his dish on a pole in his garden. I have known others to do the same. Don't think PP comes into it. It's usually just a no no in a conservation area to attach it to the house AFAIK.

You don't need PP. In a conservation area you usually can't put a dish on the elevation that faces the street, end of story.
In this case it seems irrelevant anyway, as the dish has to face south east, so you can put it on the rear elevation or in the garden.
The dish does not have to sit high up on the wall, it just needs a line of sight to the satellite.

Good link here for some guidance..

Just planning on doing a DIY install of a freesat dish on the garden shed myself (north facing rear garden) to avoid having to put it on the chimney (can't get up there myself!).

    Another good link for you:
www.dishpointer.com .. put in your postcode and pick the satellite at 28.2degrees East Astra 2D which is the one your after. It will show you on a google map exactly where your dish needs to point (move green marker around to more accurately position dish and zoom in as needed). Tick the box for obstacle checker and then as you drag the red marker around you'll see how high the line of sight to the satellite is at that point - in my case i can tell i'm ok to put my dish at ground level by the shed, point it toward my chimney and that the roof won't be in the way!

I live in a conservation area & two neighbours have had dishes put on recently, one on the front of the house () & one at the side. I know the one who put it at the side did not get planning involved & sky said it wasn't needed (they would though) but differant councils may have differant regulations, best to check.

They don't need to get planning involved. Invariably in a CA it is not permitted, full stop.
A lot of people ignore the restriction, or are ignorant of it, but if the council find that they have put the dish up after the street became part of a CA, then they can order them to remove it.
It's rarely a technical problem to put it on the side or rear, it's usually just laziness on the part of the installers, as they try to make the cable run as short as possible.

    Hi Andy,

Wow that's a great tool! :j Thank you so much for that - gives us a good idea what we can do.

(Lots of trees and shrubs around, so a ground mounted one might be a bit questionable)

Possibly it still won't work as we had to have dish put high on our chimney at home because of loadsa trees across the road in just the wrong place. ;) Fortunately we are not in a conservation area here!

We'll have to sneak into the close beside the house with a compass to try and check! ;)
