Right, thanks everybody else I haven't quoted for their comments (gosh I didn't mean this to turn into a debate on whether I should leave!). Here are my replies:
Woody- when it came to graduating I panicked as I had no plans so went to an agency to ask for admin work until I decided what to do when I was put up for this job. When I got offered it I was so surprised I took it as I thought I would regret it later if I didn't, without much thought as to how it would suit me. I KNOW I can do better, hence the GDL. Sorry if I sound jumped up or snooty or whatever but I AM smart and I AM willing to work hard (I do work hard for this employer, even though I hate the role). I apologise for having this view of myself but it is far better than staying in a dead end job because I think I can't do better. I think this company and Orange were the only employers to see my CV so I don't think the comment that my opinion oy mself doesn't match that of employers is fair because only two employers have seen my CV!
milliemonster- thank you for your comments. I'm not sure the issues I have are anything I can really talk to my manager about. From what I gather from colleagues it has always been like this-it's just the way the company is. So I can't really wade in and after 9 weeks start demanding that they change the company's ways! I am certainly not in a position to negotiate on wages or working hours either so I'm at a loss really!
TallGirl- I must say, I cannot muster up any form of love or enthusiasm for the company I work for. It's just a bog standard company providing a service to local people, nothing exciting, nothing in particular to love about it and I cannot see a career path within the company. As I've said above, there is one guy who has been in his job for decades with no promotion or anything...I would be so happy to work a crappy admin job if it were for a company I was interested in a career with! I will be doing voluntary legal work though through my law school as a way to build up experience as I know it's important for securing that all important training contract!
So to sort of sum everything up:
-the interruption at lunch time and staying late- I honestly don't mind doing either of these things-it's just when the interruption was to moan at me (which could have waited until I returned minutes later) and when it is assumed I don't have anywhere to go after work-I shouldn't be made to feel guilty for leaving on time when I need to when everyone else in the office leaves on time. Colleagues have commented on the fact I get held back later than everyone else (and get in 30 mins-an hour earlier than them as well). But these things combined with the crap pay, lack of morale in the office, crappy job, not being allowed to answer how my weekend was to someone on the phone (I told them I wanted a job in which I could talk to people in the interview HA HA), etc etc. it all makes a pretty crappy combination. I wouldn't mind crap pay if the job was interesting or whatever, but it's all of them togehter which makes it bad.
I spoke to a family member, who is now retired but worked as a manager in a company and they were shocked to hear what my workplace was like and they advised I leave once I've found other work.
I know a degree is not going to get me a job these days-in highlighting my degree what I was trying to say is that I'm intelligent (sorry again if this sounds jumped up but I am) and that I should be able to get a job which uses a bit of my brain power, which this job doesn't.
I know there is no perfect job and all jobs have their problems (it's not like I've never worked before), it's just I've never experienced anything quite like this and I've been in employment during the recession. I agree with whoever said that working isn't about being treated badly for crap wages for a monotonous job, a career should be fulfilling and exciting, not demoralising and demeaning!0 -
Hiya all,
Quick update, I spoke to recruitment consultant and told her I was going to resign. Obviously she sounded very disappointed (as she's going to lose some of her commision I guess) but she was understanding thankfully, which is more than my boss is going to be. She did say I could still temp with the agency which is a good thing I suppose.
Thanks for all your advice.0
