There are NO One Way drop off fees in CA and between CA, UT, AZ and NV.

There are with some companies...but you can usually get a rental which includes the one way fee if you book through a UK 3rd party. Last time we booked from CA to NV with carhire3000.com we were informed there WOULD be a 1-way drop fee with the company we were booked with (I think it was $200) but for £12 more they could switch it to another rental company where the fee would be included. Obviously we switched and CH3000 sent us a revised voucher with it clearly marked that there was no one-way fee. I know someone on the Vegas thread who rented through CH3000, had it confirmed any one-way fee was included, and still got charged a one-way fee. CH3000 did sort it out, but it's not the case that there's never a one-way fee between CA and NV.

So it's really important to check.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • Yup, Ferf talks sense. When I got my voucher from carhire3000, it didn't have "no one way fee" marked on it, so I got it re-sent with it added for my peace of mind.

I meant to say that as an MSE you should always use the 'many' car hire companies that do not charge a one-way fee between those states.

I've always used Netflights as they are invariably the cheapest and I've had no problems with them.

    Their T&C's
Please Note - There is no fee for one way rentals within the states of Florida and California, or for one way rentals between the states of California, Arizona and Nevada.

Just a tip but you might need to take another look at your SFO stayover. A full week could well be too long. We stayed for 4 nights i think and we were ready to move on. Its quite compact.

Also dont restrict yourself too much as you can cover an awful lot of miles in the US in surprising little time so you may well find you can fit more in than you think.
Pssst, thanks for the advice but we have to take the full week as it's a timeshare exchange. I know most people just do it in a couple of days. Actually, I think it'll be fine for us as I've already uncovered heaps of things I want to do. We may take the Wine Train out to the Sonoma/Napa Valley one day, and want to go to Sausalito one day too. Anyone here been to either of those??

Sausalito is beautiful - well worth going if it's a nice day. Not a huge amount there but a very relaxed feel. You can actually walk there, just turn right after going over the Golden Gate Bridge. It will take you a good hour though, and I would only suggest walking if you are planning on walking over the bridge.

Spent a few days based in Napa, a pretty, quiet little town with lots of nice clapperboard houses, interesting architecture and a few nice restaurants. Also explored several wine estates spread out along hwy29 St Helena Hwy. There are some really nce little towns along the way such as Yountville,Oakville and Calistoga. Sausalito is also well worth a visit and maybe walk across the bridge?

Of interest (possibly?) is the Presidio and the Miltiary cemetery on the San Fran side of the bridge.

Also Goldengate park in SFO, bordered by Lincoln way and fulton st. Especially the fab big Victorian style cast iron and glass mega conservatory of flowers and butterfly house. Lots of interesting exotic stuff in there

Sausalito lovely, quiet town but well worth the visit. Took a coach over and the ferry back.
Wine Train was ok but lunch aboard a bit mass catering. As a non-wine buff it was lost on me. If you have time, I'd definitely recommend this place for dinner:

Great! Walking over the bridge was on the to-do list, so we'll maybe do Sausalito that day too. Maybe walk in one direction and take public transport back if that's possible.

Sounds like a nice change from the big city for a day.

Thanks, will google it to find out a bit more about it.

Yep - we have that on the list (main reason being hubby's hero Jerry Garcia is buried in there somewhere I think) The exotic stuff sounds more appealing to me though! /QUOTE]

Thanks for the info. Do you remember which type of train carriage you went on? There is a basic package without lunch - do you think that would be the best option? Their website makes the lunch sound nice (of course!). I'm not really a wine buff either, just thought it would make an interesting day out. Did you book in advance or when you got out there?
