Having a For Sale board when selling house ?

I'm currently trying to sell my house, and trying to decide whether to have a sign outside or not.
My street is a fairly "smart" one, and it seems that houses for sale often don't have signs outside. Also, I'd rather not broadcast the state of my sale to everybody. My street doesn't get a lot of passing traffic.
In these days of Internet sales, are For Sale boards still a good thing for the vendor ?

I have a very specific area that I would move to and sometimes drive around the roads to see if there are any boards up, if there are I then go back & have a look online or request details from the EAs.
So even if you don't get a lot of passing traffic it may be worth it as you don't know whether anyone's stalking your street
Also why do you care what the neighbours think? As soon as you sell up you'll be gone and won't give them another thought!

I would say yes too, only last week me and my OH were out driving and went past a lovely looking house with a for sale sign outside. We went and asked the owner's what the asking price was, and were given a full tour!£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

There was another thread here recently where someone complained loudly about the lack of sale boards; they'd found a brace of properties on the web, went to drive by each of them, and found that they couldn't locate some of them due to a lack of sale boards.
If someone wants to move to your area, they don't routinely look at any website where your house is listed, and they're doing the drive-by first, how will they know yours is for sale?
Your neighbours, in this internet age, will most likely find out the status of your sale from the internet, regardless of whether or not you have a sale board or not. They may even phone up your agent and pose as buyers to find out your asking price, whether or not you're under offer, etc. At the end of the day - why do you care what they think? You're moving away from them.
Personally, I'd have the sale board AND I'd go round all the neighbours with a flyer telling them the house is For Sale, and do they know any friends or family who want to move closer to them, and would they buy my house?0 -
I would have a for sale sign. You never know, a neighbour might have a friend looking to move to the area etc and mention it.
Would be a missed trick to not have a boardI run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0 -
Last time I sold the estate agent's signers put the board outside my neighbours house
That didn't go down to well.
Definitley worth having.0 -
As someone recently looking I can only echo the above, get a board. Not doing so can only make it harder for buyers to locate you, which gives no benefit whatsoever.0

I would definitely have a 'for sale' board. We sold my partner's house earlier in the year - we didn't get any viewings, but then dropped the price significantly. I work from home, with my office at the front of the house and saw loads of people doing 'drive bys' - we were in a cul-de-sac where it was really obvious when people were looking at the house.
The house we are in now didn't have a for sale board, the estate agents didn't have a website and it wasn't on Rightmove. We had walked round the area many times, loved the street but never knew that the house was for sale. I found it by chance on the internet on an obscure property website & we bought it. It had been on the market for over a year - that tells you something!0 -
When I was house hunting, I cruised the streets of neighbourhoods I liked and jotted down details of For Sale signs -- however the house I ended up buying did not have a sign. The EA mentioned it after a different viewing - the vendors did not want a sign for sentimental reasons (house belonged to their deceased mother
) ... Certainly was a good thing for us, as obviously not many spontaneous enquiries about the house meant our purchase went smoothly.
