I suppose its not but as its a hastle to get the ticket to my mum (will have to make a trip to Watford before the 24th) and having to wait around for 1/2 hr too I dont think its worth it.
Has she got a free bus pass?
If so, get your mum to catch the bus to St Albans.
    Bus 321, every 30 mins.
The Tourist Information Office is almost next to the bus stop in St. Peters Street.

In fact, might it be an idea for your mum to catch a bus to St Albans on 24th, then buy two Daysave tickets, then short walk to St Albans station and catch a train to Gatwick.

As I read it, from zone A (Gatwick) there are no restrictions in the evening peak. The restrictions only apply if you board the train in or near London.
    Absolutely right, Dzug.

OP, see the restrictions page for full details.

    Evening Restrictions
On Mondays to Fridays, restrictions apply to northbound trains departing Moorgate, King's Cross, and St Pancras International (or passing through St Pancras International) during the evening peaks between 1630 and 1901.

it says passing through so even if you dont get on there you still cant pass through between 5 and 7

But the website goes on to say...
These restrictions do not apply when the ticket covers:

    • any journey from area A
    • journeys wholly within areas A, B and C
    • journeys wholly within areas C, D and E
    • any journey to area E
    • any southbound journey
Gatwick is in zone A. So the first bullet point covers it.

To find out details of the zones see this map.

    As you said earlier...

    "Gosh all so complicated..."
