Gatwick to St Albans by Train

Any idea how I can get discounted tickets?

My mum is collecting a friend from gatwick on 24th Sept

She is going from Watford Junction to Gatwick to collect her (am trying to buy ticket on the Southern Railway website for £4.50 but its not letting me at the mo.

Then 2 of them will get the train from Gatwick to St Albans (because I can collect them from St Albans and its a direct train so they dont have to change alot. The lady is quite elderly)

I sadly dont finish work until 5.30 and the plane lands at 5 so I cant drive and pick her up.

The cheapest gatwick to St A is £18 each!!

There are many Advance Singles on that day at £4.50.
    Dep Watford Junc at 11:51, 12:51, 13:51, 14:51 and 15:51 (and others).
    Arr Gatwick at 13:08, 14:08, 15:08, 16:08 and 17:08 respectively.
Need to change at Clapham Junction.

To get the £4.50 price, you must book online at Southern Railway website.
You must travel on the booked train.

If you buy a daysave ticket at £14.50 a head it will cover the Gatwick - St Albans journey. (It would also cover the outward journey at no extra cost so you don't need to struggle with that Southern ticket)

Only snag is that this ticket can only be bought in a few Tourist Information Offices - but there is one in St Albans - St Albans Tourist Information Centre, Townhall, Market Place, St. Albans AL3 5DJ

Gosh all so complicated, incase anyone is interested.

The daysave only covers the Thames Link line and you can only travel off peak (not leaving a London Station between 5&7 in the eve) so the soonest train they could catch would be the 18.31.

It is also not valid going from watford to Gatwick

:-( oh well, thanks for your help though, so many t&cs with train tickets!

If the flight arrives at Gatwick at 5pm, its going to be 6pm before they've passed through baggage collection and passport control I would imagine.

So 18:31 isn't too far away is it?

As I read it, from zone A (Gatwick) there are no restrictions in the evening peak. The restrictions only apply if you board the train in or near London

    Agree it doesn't cover Watford.

When I spoke to them they said as the train goes through London and stops ie kings cross etc that it can't be between 5 and 7. Anoyingly the st albans line is peak in the eve if leaving London.

I suppose its not but as its a hastle to get the ticket to my mum (will have to make a trip to Watford before the 24th) and having to wait around for 1/2 hr too I dont think its worth it.
