What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

  • Hi everyone

Dashes in to say I'm up to 13/16 and still keeping to my alternate days plan. I've not been able to keep up on here this week but wanted to post quickly to say I'm doing fine. I'm finding the day after a drinking day I've stopped having the conversation with myself in my head now. It's just a no, today is an AFD, end of conversation. But I do have some trade offs along the lines of if I want to drink on Wednesday then I need to put in an extra day somewhere to get my days lined up for that night. This month will soon beat any month last year for my AFDs and has involved less effort too.

Have a good day everyone. AF for me tonight.
  • i'm wondering what to substitute it with, don't want to end up eating choc, treats, picky things as a distraction. How do you get the first few days under your belt without starting further bad habits?

For me, I tried to replace it with other things but none hit the spot like a beer, glass of wine, etc
Eventually I looked at the underlying reasons why I was drinking too much, and uncovered lots of fear, anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, fear of intimacy, etc
I covered it all up with alcohol.

Thus for me, I had to stop drinking and look at these feelings, and the premise that these feelings are founded on. Because I continue to look at myself, and my motivations for wanting to drink & to escape, I now no longer want a drink today.

My 'substitute' for drinking is to be happy, and be kind to myself. I wasn't good to myself nor others when drinking.

I did feel sugar lows, so Ribena and Maltesers worked for me until my body adjusted to not having alcohol in its system (and the sugar in the drinks)

I can look back now and see that I spent a long long time living something like this......

    Wake up....caffiene and nicotine fix
Work at mach 3 speed on manic setting 7 and stress level 8
Midday drug of choice-sugar nicotine caffiene
    More manic work
    Compulsive sex
    alcohol
    nicotine

What a mess I was but it was quite handy as it meant i didn't ever have to STOP. Never gave my mind time to bring up uncomfortable feelings/thoughts.
Finally i burnt out. I was going to say I miss the drama of my past life....but in fact I don't. My life is different now, I'm dealing with the uncomfortable thoughts/feelings I'm still a caffiene and a nicotine addict but I'm not blocking my senses with alcohol anymore.

    Life is good. x

Thank you so much for this post, particularly the bit I've highlighted, it's how I feel at the moment xx

(have slightly amended what you said)

For some reason this makes me feel like bursting into tears (I musn't, I mustn't, am in work!!)

I've just never looked at it in this way & I'm going to try & keep this in my head.

I see having a drink as a treat & an indulgence, "go on, you've earned it, you deserve it, it's Friday (Sat, Sun, Mon.....)", in other words I'm being nice to me.

Nice, maybe, but not kind. Thank you for putting a new slant on it GC.

    Thanks :)

Meant to pick a bone with you over the 'bint' comment.....far too far back to quote now, can't be 'aris'd to look for it. Bint...indeed :p:D

  • Morning everyone

forgot to post yesterday - was my 12 AF day. Feel sad and emotional today - one of the childrens friends Mum has terminal bowel cancer and the docs have told her it's just a matter of time.

Things like this unsettle me hugely yet I know I am going to need to be a huge support to others - I also know it's selfish to worry about me when she is goimg through such a dreadful time.

Sorry for bleak tone of message - I honestly have no one else to tell.
    I x
