Are you getting the cheapest BT package?

This may have already come up as a topic, if so I apologise. Today I received my quarterly BT bill and noticed that I was still paying £17.80 a month for Broadband Option 1. I remembered that my brother in law had recently signed up at under £10. So I phoned them up. "Oh yes, as you are a long time customer (BT BB since 2006) you can have a special rate of £9.23 for exactly the same service." "This offer has been available to long time customers such as yourself for 2-3 months". So I signed up and all but halved my BB cost :j.

However
  1. If it's been available for 2-3 months, why didn't they tell me? Why did I have to ask them ?
  2. If it's for long term customers, how come my brother in law got offered exactly the same package and a free home hub? He was using pay-as-you-go dial up previously.
  3. Just how long has this deal been available?
The agent also said that he would put me down for some sort of speed enhancing adjustment / equipment to get me nearer the 2Mb I'm paying for (never got better than about 930Kb up till now). I wish him luck out here in rural Oxfordshire, 4km from the exchange.

You might ask why I'm with BT at all, but over the years I've had bad experiences with 4 of the other major suppliers and at least with BT they own all the copper and equipment so there's no argument as to who's responsible for performance and fixing problems.

The moral is that if you have BT BB, phone them up from time to time and ask if you're getting the best deal.

    1. They never tell you, its the same with free connection for phone lines

If you have LLU on your exchange you might be better off with someone like O2

Nah, been there, done that 4 times. I had to take one company to the ombudsman before they stopped hounding me for money I didn't owe, they'd been charging me twice! They also mucked up the MAC code when I tried to switch. Customer service was a bad joke, they never had details of my previous calls and ignored letters.
In general, if there is a problem each company involved (BT + ANother) tries to blame the other. Problems have to be passed through that company not directly to BT which adds to the delays in fixing them. Then BT seems to put the fault at the back of the queue as it's not their customer.
Add to that a mysterious doubling of my broadband speed when I did switch back to BT. At least now there is only one company to deal with and they can't fob me off with useless delaying "tests" etc.
