Infrared heating

  • As I said in my initial post I know the only brand that has been tested by the BBA and BRI is Redwell not the Ergonomics brand, the latter being I believe Multiguards.

There is now proof See TUV certification and there is pending findings to be released by the BBA.

My associate at The Energy Saving Trust informs me that the TUV certs, would ordinarily be enough to gain accreditation from themselves however I believe the manufacturers have invested in the testing to speed the process. I know that building SAPS (Energy Perfiormance calculation) would only recognise infrared as electrical heating and this would not be very favourable, hence I presume the investment

The infrared heater panels are more efficient than convection heating . I dont think anyone is claiming they generate more heat -They do heat you and the buildings fabric direct which in turn warms the enmvironment eg your walls radiate the heat. convection heats the environment and the fabric of the building then steals this heat, hence the need to replenish is continual.

Personally, I am looking forward to the likely changes of perception my colleagues expect despite my forte in renewables as I believe overall it will bring about cleaner energy and create opportunities.
Although, I fear/expect as our reliance on fossil fuels declines the costs will increase so the BPs etc can claim back on their investments, which will only drive the need of joe public faster towards alternatives .. the utillity companies have created their own demise...
  • I have just spoke to one of the firms mentioned earlier and I was informed that The Alternative Technology Centre in Hebden Bridge Yorkshire has one on display. I am going to Burnley tommorrow only about 10 miles away, and this conversation has me engrossed in these as the more I look more intrirued I become, this may be an avenue as a business I should be looking, hence will call.
They also offerd to forward the fact data and brochure, now energy I am knowing, computers I am not... does anybody know where I can upload and how (idiots guide please) for us to share!

Do I understand you correctly? You are contemplating starting a business selling these heaters? really?

I have a suggestion for you. Why not get 'your contact' at the Energy Saving Trust(name dropping) to put detail about them on their website - it will carry a lot more weight than any blurb from firms advertising their products.(actual firms or potential firms;))

If they don't generate more heat(for the running cost) yet warm the environment what is the 'magic ingredient' - that quote just rubbish.

Also the certification says no more than, in effect, they are safe to use. Nothing about them being more efficient - all electrical heating is 100% efficient.( leaving aside ASHP.

Sorry to say this but I think we are being set up here!!!

    P.S.
Incidentally in case you try the 'uninformed posters' tack again - I am a Chartered Electrical Engineer and there are plenty of other qualified engineers who post here, so pseudo scientific garbage, so beloved of people advertising these sort of products, will not work.

P.P.S. you didn't answer my question. Do you not think the website is a disgrace?
  • Very interesting are you attending the IET in November, would be interesting to debate this there!
I merely suggested that as a consultant I do not supply products only services) this is an area I need to investigate to be able to competently stay in touch with technology so I give 100% informed and impartial advice.

No I do not find the website disgusting, as I am not willing to dismiss without thorough investigation though I would suggest they lack a little technical data.

The EST will I am sure publish the BBA finding and endorse the product as, when and if the claims qaulify.

    A little ?

So you find this quote to be acceptable?
The incredible efficiency of thermal infra red equates to substantial savings on heating bills across all three of the main heating mediums ie gas and oil fired radiators along with electric storage heaters.
The following examples are results of independant tests carried out to compare the energy usage of infra red panels against the other three heating options.
The tests are based on reaching and maintaining a comfortable level of thermostatically controlled heat in a domestic home.
INFRA RED v GAS CENTRAL HEATING

INFRA RED USED ONLY 38% OF THE ENERGY THAT GAS USED
    INFRA RED v OIL FIRED

INFRA RED USED ONLY 30% OF THE ENERGY THAT OIL USED
INFRA RED v NIGHT STORAGE HEATERS

INFRA RED USED ONLY 28% OF THE ENERGY THAT NIGHT STORAGE HEATERS USED
