Major holiday scam involving Florida telemarketers

  • Just had a phone call from a company saying that i had won a trip of a lifetime to Florida and a Disney resort.

They wanted to know which, out of Mastercard or Visa gave the best service. When i said Mastercard they told me that Mastercard had chosen me because i was a good customer with good credit rating to win this prize.
She gave me her name Mary Daniels and tel no ; 001 407 574 7210 and then asked for my 16 digit Mastercard number.
I refused to give it to her explaining that because of scams etc i would never give my credit card number out to anyone over the telephone.
She gave a long account of themselves and how Disney and Mastercard were reputable companies and this is not a scam and she is just doing her job etc.
I still refused and asked her to send me details of the prize in writing.....of course that was the end of the conversation.
I am sure this is a scam like the one you have just had. But she was so professional that i am sure they will snare some other unsuspecting and more trusting people later on today. You could hear other callers in the background, it sounded busy which also made it more plausible.
So glad i had my wits about me and did not give her the number but even although i know not to i actually got my card out in front of me....it would have been very easy to do it!!

Hope no-one else gets caught by this one.

Jenmay - That number is actually a cell phone!!!

For future use see here it "reverse searches" the number and gives the company as long as it is not unlisted (ex-directory)
    http://www.411.com/search/ReversePhone?full_phone=407+574+7210+

Also if you Google the telephone number you can read any warnings that others have posted or you can post your warnings.

  • well, these rogues are trying it out on Australians as well now. i got a call early this morning our time. id just got up. i was gruff and told them to go away and hung up.
they rang again about two hours later and tried the whole spiele on me. the lady who was doing the talking had such a broad accent i could only pick up one word in about six. i should have just hung up then.
but, i let her talk. i wanted her to arrange to send all her info in an email to me. she hedged on that one. i got the whole'' exciting details'' before i was able to get a word in edgeways.
i complained that i couldnt understand her. then a guy came on and tried the same with me. it took about three minutes to work out where they were coming from and i said so. i guarantee that they put that phone down so quickly it was immediate.
i was angry. i got online and found this site and have been reading . thanks guys for sharing your experiences with us.
im adding my bit now.. so anyone from Aussieland knows that they are trying it on here as well.
    regards to all. judych

In case anyone is daft enough to give account details over the phone
    DO NOT DO IT Simple.
  • I just received a similar call, said I had registered for a prize in the last 12 months (no, my memory isn't that bad). They had my address and phone number but wanted my credit card number and expiry date.

They wanted $287 per person to hold the holiday, just confirm the credit card number. I asked them to give me the credit card number and I would confirm if it was correct. Of course they couldn't because confirmations only usually show the first 4 or last 4 digits, not the 8 in the middle.

I kept saying, this deal is too good to be true. I could use a good holiday, money is short so it was more tempting than normal. The first thing I did when I hung up on them was to google "holiday scams floriday" and found this website with almost exactly the same scam.

:-( I really wanted it to be true but thank goodness. Charles in their Shipping Dept. was really ticked with me. LOL.
My mother, who is 84, was conned by these people into giving her card number etc. and they took just under £500 from her card.

I have disputed the transaction on her behalf and they want her to write to these people and ask for the money back, and if not they will "look into it" with a view to a refund.

This happened in November 2009 so we are well over the 30 day limit but I did not get this info until the middle of February.

Does anyone have a confirmed UK or USA phone number or address to send a letter to please.

Thanks for the info so far.
