Major holiday scam involving Florida telemarketers

SEARCHERMAN - Your info from the Credit Card company is inaccurate. You tell them that this payment was unauthorized and you want the money back, it is up to them to contact the merchant (they paid it into their account and have their information) and question the payment - it is part of the merchant agreement that they have to do this. You may wish to contact the police and log the "scam" to get a crime number to give to the CC Company. If they wont play ball - ask the FOS (0845 080 1800) for advice.
Also you may want to get mother to cancel that credit card altogether and get another one, as they now have the details and these crooks can pass it on to others so "blocking" payments to that merchant is no good.C. (Ex-Pat Brit)

Thanks to GomerPyle for this and to all the others who have posted helpful comments in this thread.
I found this thread because my 89 year old Grandmother has just been conned for £600 by "calipso cay"
With the advice given here, I am hoping we will get her money back.
Will keep you informed.

Am I the only one to find it odd that so many posters with only one or two posts ever made keeping bumping this thread?
:huh:0 -
Karen - Yes!
Is'nt that the whole point, to get as many as possible to post and help save others money (or warn of loosing money in this case). And we were all new posters at one stage!C. (Ex-Pat Brit)

Anyone who is caught by this scam just heed this advice
My mother-in-law was caught by Calypso Cay on 03/03/2010.
Under Florida law they have to give you a refund if you ask for one within 21 days. We did and were strung along until we contacted the Attorney General's office in Tallahassee. With their help we have received a full refund today to the tune of $897.00. If you go to Calypso Cays website there is an 0800 phone number so keep badgering them as well
Hope this helps

So I am in Australia and I have been given this exact scam over the phone...
What sucked me in at first was my work collegue who had answered the phone and was told I won a holiday and he got all excited and had me going too.
I asked how they got my details, they said I entered a competition on facebook or google but I do not remember at all.
I did give them card details to keep them on the line, but it was for a non existent account and they told me it was declined right over the phone within seconds of giving to them. anyway they said if I call them back when I have money I get a bonus vegas trip too.
They gave me the number 0018133861099 and address to make it sound legit. I got off the phone and googled the details they gave me and found all these forums and reports thats its a scam or timeshare.
So we know all about the scam, but how did they get my/our details??
I can trace it back to two possible sources because they called my work number and I only give out my work number to places online I feel uneasy about....
1. The first was an ebay seller from China, who needed my number for a registered parcel, and
2. I did dome stupid IQ test online and was told I won a phone and to put some details in to claim it, so I put in my work number and work email knowing I had won Jack but hey thought what the heck those details aren't harmful
Every time I come across a potential scam that asks for my phone number I will be entering the number above that these scammers gave me....0 -

ok hi its me again....
This is where I know for a fact they got my details..
free - test dot com dot au
it appeared as an add on a health and diet site I was surfing, I guess they pop up as adds all over the web.
I know no one with half a brain even does them but I was bored so I did it and filled in my details at the end, this is where I gave my work number thinking it was probably dodgy but I had forgot I provided a small survey of info not thinking much of it as i had been doing surveys for work all week.
I am sure they'll call back, guess I better tell them I cannot travel to their country because I am a convicted killer.......of scammers!!0 -
Tell them you were declared bankrupt "last month" and they took all your cards - they hang up immediately!!!C. (Ex-Pat Brit)
