M&S Oak Dining Table faded - whats my rights

We had an Addisson Dining table delivered 7-8 weeks ago, ever since it has a vase sitting on a cork pad in the middle of it, we lifted the vase and cork pad and the table has a round mark of the pad on it, only its lighter than the table rather than the expexted other way round if the table had faded in sunlight - any advice, should we contact M&S - it was a £999 table.

Can anyone explain why its back to front i.e lighter under the pad?

Thanks

What kind of vase is it? I mean is it something porous which could potentially have seeped into the mat and damaged the table? Or is the mat treated with anything? I can't work out how a table would get lighter under the pad! How is the table finished? It sounds like a mystery!
  • it was a glass vase on a normal run of the mill cork flexible dinner mat. I suppose i would say the table is finished in a high quality smooth varnish, hasn't had anything hot on it - as we don't have dining chairs yet to sit at it!!

Could the cork pad have absorbed moisture from being used previously (ie nothing to do with the vase?)

Maybe it's nothing to do with the vase, maybe the porous cork mat has soaked up some of the moisture/varnish from the table and helped along with a heavy vase on top of it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The vase and the pad haven't done anything to the table other than block the light.

Wood darkens.....by keeping a pad in the same place for weeks you have blocked the light from that area. If you leave the table clear, the colouring should eventually even out.

It's only the finishing (stain/varnish etc) that may fade in light after time, wood itself will darken.

It sounds like the cork mat had some moisture content which then seeped out and into the table - moisture will generally cause a light mark on any polised or varnished wooden surface. I imagine the table will have had some care instructions with it and unless guaranteed waterproof i am afraid you have no comeback against the vendor

  • Just had our chairs delivered by a different company - they reckon the cork pad has souked up some of the laquer/varnish from the table - let that be a lesson to us all, no porous cork pads!

Now, should i regularly polish the spot to build some back up?
  • PM me and I'll take it off your hands for £50 as you abviously do not want it

Aliasojo has your answer - just take everything off the table and let the sunlight darken the pale spot. The rest of the table won't get much darker, so it's highly likely that the patch will blend in in time. If you start messing with polish/stains etc at this point, you risk making it worse, so just wait and see.

There's no way that a cork pad can 'soak up' colour, so I think you can discount that little gem.
