  • I failed first time too! was such a nightmare!
I dont think tests like me! On my theory test, the computer mouse didnt work when i was doing the hazard perception test, so got a 0 haha! they had to fill in a report and request a free retest - but had to wait a month!

Then on my practical, 1 week before my test my instructor was taken into hospital, i had less than a week to find a new instructor - managed to have 1 lesson in new car before my test! was horrible driving a car i wasnt used to, and going from a diesel to a petrol i stalled a few times on my test, and didnt get chance to practice everything! - ended up getting 4 minors 1 major - speeding! doing 35 in a 30 - thought was 40! doh!
Passed 2nd time with 3 minors with my old instructor!

All the best drivers passed on their second attempt.;)

Sometimes folk are lucky, sometimes they're unlucky - think of it as practising for the next time you sit the test, don't think of it as 'I have to pass today' - that will help you be more relaxed.

fwiw on my second attempt I went over the stop line at traffic lights about 2 minutes into my test, though I'd failed, but carried on as if I were just practising - the examiner passed me, I was over the line but not unsafe so it wasn't a major way back in 1994!!:j

the first test I sat, I'm convinced the examiner took one look at me and didn't like me - I think it was because I was taller than him - but I'm barely 5'5"!!

  • I've heard that in order to raise extra money and keep the Government test centers rolling that the number of people failing their tests at the moment is up so that retakes are required. Look out! One way of increasing businsess. You'll need more observation than ever.

I heard a similar thing, but I think it's born out of the low first-time pass rates, possibly caused by a lot of people who take their test not really being 100% ready for it, or making a stupid mistake they otherwise wouldn't due to nerves. For example, the pass rate at my local test centre is 15% (first time) and 46% (overall).

I took my test recently there, and passed first time, so it is possible..! :)

++ EDIT: Thinking about it, it could also be due to a difference of opinion between the examiner, student, and instructor. When my examiner went through my minors, neither I nor my instructor believed 4 of them were correct. Having said that, I also think they missed two others, so it kinda balances out...
  • Sorry this was so long ago, I passed my test in the end:j, 7 weeks ago today actually! I was less nervous, and the examiner was very nice. I thought i had made loads of mistakes. We got back to the test centre, my instructor was stood with a frown, he thought i had failed, but i passed. Haven't had any accidents yet! but scratched the side the other day, when a car coming very fast down a narrow road forced me to pull very far over, he drove past the place he could pull in! Oh well, i love driving now thanks for all the comments when i failed my first one!:T
