Booked a flight with Ryanair in my maiden name...help, I'm German! lol

Hey guys,

I am attending my cousins funeral on Saturday and I've just booked a lastminute not so cheap flight with Ryanair. I also got married recently and in my foolishness I booked the flight with my new name whilst my maiden name shows on the passport.

I've read the other similar threads and the easy solution seems to be to get the passport name changed. I actually have a German passport so its impossible for me to get the name changed at such short notice.

I really can't afford an extra £100 to change my name and rebooking the flight would cost me a similar amount. Has anyone had any luck with taking the marriage certificate along with the passport? I booked the flight 30 minutes ago :(

  • Call Ryanair and ask if they would be kind enough to change it. If you explain the circumstances and don't change any other personal details, they should be good enough to change it for free. Ryanair are not the monsters that some people would like to portray them as :)

  • You can't change the passport before you get married. So you should be able to travel with passport + marriage certificate.

My wife has done it, on our honeymoon. Surely lots of people do the same?

That depends on how 'recent' the marriage is!
    Gone ... or have I?

You can change your name from 3 months prior to the wedding. Couples who want to travel as "Mr and Mrs X" are advised to do this as the name on the passport and the name on the ticket need to match. I don't think the ability to produce your marriage certificate is a universal rule, as airlines and tour operators would expect women to be able to purchase a ticket in the same name as on thier passport.

Of course the above doesn't help the original poster and I can only suggest - as has already been helpfully suggested - that they contact Ryanair, explain the situation and ask their advice. With any luck they will either allow travel on the married name ticket + maiden name passport + marriage certificate or will change the name on the ticket to the maiden name for free. Worst case scenario is that a name change fee will need to be paid or a new ticket booked.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.

Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

  • Thank you for the info guys thats given me a little hope at least, I shall phone them first thing tomorrow and hope they have filled the coffers enough for this week.

I'll let you all know how I got on :)
  • They let me change my name as "a gesture of good will" for a fee of £10 and a 10 minute phone call. Could have been worse I guess!

Could have been a lot worse! Few airlines would let you do that, yet you appear pretty ungrateful?

Just shows that Ryanair aren't as evil as everyone says they are. I wouldn't have allowed such a name change, personally!

  • Business is business and Ryanair certainly has an awesome business model.

I am miffed, it was a small mistake that I had corrected within hours. Also as a student I am really watching the pennies I have very little to live on this year as it is.

So forgive me for not sounding all that grateful for having another £10 extracted from my already depleted account :)
