What to do near Scalby/Scarborough?

You'll have a lovely time. Not sure how old your in-laws are but Scarborough is quite steep to walk up from the beach but there is a cliff cable car that the kids love riding up on and it saves the knees - 60p well spent in my opinion!
In Whitby there is a lovely fish restaurant that looks out over the sea on the hill called the Khyber Pass. Its at the end of the sea front amusements. Terrific views over the sea through picture windows and we had a gorgeous steak cooked to perfection. Not awful prices either.
You couldn't miss it as its perched halfway up the hill and you'll hear all the poor folk weezing as they try to climb up to the hotel at the top!
In Scarborough we had a meal at a place called 55 -again halfway up the hill that leads from the middle of the seafront to the shops at the top. The do a lovely lemon sole and again beautiful views over the beach.
If you happened to make your way past Bridlington to Hornsea then there is a sweet little place called Cafe Chocolat which serves the very best hot chocolate I have ever tasted and beautifully presented. DH is planning another weekend break up there just so we can go back to have another one. They let you pick one of their handmade chocolates to have afterwards.
You can see that I'm into the lazy, eating type hols, can't you?
Which reminds me - if you're going to York you should check out The Cornish Pasty Shop. Its in the same road as Lush, might be Coney Street.
Discovered it when we were in York recently. Didn't even think I like pasties till I tried theirs... Goodness all my landmarks are food based.
Word on parking - very expensive in York. Think we paid £6 for about 3 hrs in the Coppergate central car park. Tad cheaper by the river but not much.
Scarborough seafront was about 2/3 of that and Bridlington was £3.50 all day.AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £115.93/ £250

Yes my husband plans to take my father-in-law there to the National Railway Museum - think I'd rather hit the shops though! Thanks for the tips.
Dont know whether you know but the NRM is free but dont take the car if
possible. The parking fees are horrendous. There are lots of Park and Rides on the ring road round York and its walkable from the city centre.
HIt the shops by all means but have a walk along the river, or go on the York boat. Castle Museum is just the best.
You can never get lost in York, if you walk for long enough you will eventually get back from where you started.:rotfl::rotfl:
Enjoy !!!make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Scalby Manor is owned by Crown Carveries and does a good carvery for £3.50 Mon-Sat.
If visiting York we find it best to use the Park and Ride systems which are really good.
Just off the Whitby to Scarborough Road there is a local beauty spot called Falling Foss which has a nice outside tea area and good walks.
Hope you enjoy this area, we think its beautiful.0 -
Yes Scalby manor is just on outskirts of Scarborough/Burniston

Thanks everyone for all these useful suggestions. I'm adding the places to my to-do list.
My father-in-law is only going to be with us Sat - Monday (taking a train back to Scotland late afternoon on Monday). He is in his 80s and has problem knees so is definitely not going to cope with those hills in Scarborough. On the plus side as far as parking goes, he has a disabled badge so we'll be able to park right at the NRM in York, which is also right by the station for his return trip.
Anyone else going to the Railway museum with an elderly or infirm person might be interested to know that they will loan you a folding wheelchair. I phoned to reserve one (it's free). Eden Camp near Malton also have these.0 -

Thanks - we shall definitely do some walking Tues - Sat whn it's just me and hubby.0 -
I'd avoid Robin Hood's bay - got there and thought "is this it?" Quite disappointed as I'd heard lots of people say how nice it was.
If you're into old houses and gardens, Cragside is brilliant - you could spend a whole day there. Don't know if it's in your travel area though.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Cragside is no where near!! It's in Northumbria, and is definitely worth a visit, but on a separate holiday.
We live close enough to Scarborough for day trips and love it, as well as Bridlington, Filey (less going on, more "old time"), Whitby, Robins Hoods Bay, Thornton Dale, Pickering, the North York Moors, and York itself.0 -

I'm really surprised and disappointed to hear that. When we drive up to Whitby we'll probably take a quick look anyway, but won't get our hopes up too much then.0 -

Great - it's good to get personal recommendations. I think we shall have plenty to keep us busy now! Thanks all.0
