What to do near Scalby/Scarborough?

We have booked a cottage for a week in Scalby nerar Scarborough in early October. Never been to this part of the world before. We are active and in our 50s. Want to go on some nice walks, find some nice pubs, eat some nice meals. Can anyone offer any tips/hints on best places. Are there any 'must-sees'? We'll have a car and can don't mind driving, say, as far as Whitby. Any help much appreciated!

  • Scarborough is great - spent summers of my childhood there.
http://www.scarborough.co.uk/index.html has a bit of info.
If you're near the sea front at Scalby, I'm sure you can walk along to the North Bay. I remember having Knickerbockerglorys at The Corner Cafe (probably been knocked down now). There's a park there (can't remember the name) and a bit further on there's Peasholm Park which is lovely. The two bays are quite different - the South Bay is more lively. If you can, visit places like Thornton-le-Dale and the Hackness area and of course Whitby (fish and chips) and Robin Hood's bay. The North Yorkshire Moors are also interesting (Goathland etc). You'll have a great time.

Corner cafe is no more it was pulled down 3 years ago, the whole north bay is in a state of flux at moment, all there is is peasholm park, north bay railway and flats where corner cafe was. Oh almost forgot beach chalets and been redone but long waiting list for them to rent

If you are at Scalby which is very close to me, there nice walk at end Scalby on coastal road towards Burniston from Scarborough along scalby mills until sea life centre

As said both bays cater for different things although both a nice. Nice walk along both bays along marine drive it will take you around an hour, harbour bar is a must have and cafe next door to it

see this thread on what I posted

Thanks, savemoney. Have made a note of that coastal walk. Hadn't heard of Dalby Forest but will definitely try to get there. Goathland and the North Yorks Moors railway are part of the reason we chose this area.
  • RSPB bird reserve is a place we visit each year. 400 foot cliffs, a couple of miles of coastal path, a hut / shop for gifts, sweets and drinks. A little late in the season now, but it will give you a taster for next Spring. Take your binoculars, a brilliant day out even in Autumn. On the map it is BEMPTON CLIFFS, midway between Bridlington and Scarborough. Enjoy.

Robin Hood's Bay - fabulous, you can almost feel the smugglers (I mean old day smugglers, as in pirates times, of course);)

    Bridlington is nice too.

Want to travel as far as York, or take an excursion trip.
You will never reqret going to York for the day.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • And if you fancy a sweet treat then you have to call into Elizabeth Botham's cake shops. YUM!
We've had holidays along the Whitby/Scarborough/Bridlington coast for years, just coming back from the latter a couple of days ago. Love that area.

Yes my husband plans to take my father-in-law there to the National Railway Museum - think I'd rather hit the shops though! Thanks for the tips.

Thanks, Dave. I'll tell my husband to bring the bird book too.
