Son not entitled to Jobseekers- has no income - Help

Hello
Can anyone help - my son is 20years old - is currently living in a council run hostel - where he is getting housing benefit for the majority of the rent - he has to contribute £16.31 a week out of his benefits. (to add - he is now in arrears due to having no income)
However the thing is he claimed for Jobseekers after losing his last job - in December - he started to receive money then stopped it for 1 week - due to his reasons for leaving - then reinstated his claim after just a 1 week penalty - he moved into the hostel on the 3rd of August. Last JSA was paid about 2 months ago - and his claim was abruptly cancelled with no explanation - they are telling him they can't tell him why it was cancelled - and they would not allow him to make another claim - he has slight MH issues (not related to intelligence or learning more state of mind based) and has made an application for DLA - nothing has been heard regarding this yet. My son has been unable to pay his contribution towards the rent at the hostel - and he has had no money to live on for 2 months - I cried and cried the last time I saw him as he was skin and bones - he has been refused a crisis loan - because he is not entitled to JSA - if something does not happen soon he will end up on the streets and I am so scared for him - I have told him to go to CAB - can anybody offer any advice in the meantime.
Thank you so much

I have no advice but wonder - can you not at least help out with some hot food for him? I am assuming you have no room for him at home? Not even to sleep on the sofa? Has he a social worker that can help?
  • Why doesn't he move in with you ?
  • I didnt think you needed to be on JSA for a crisis loan?
    Thinking it over...:o
  • I have given him £50 to get some food - there are reasons he can't come home - which are too many to go into at the moment - they would not give him a crisis loan - because his claim was cancelled - I don't understand - he has a social worker who seems to be next to useless at offering any help

Perhaps you should be a little more pro-active on your son's behalf? Giving money is well and good, but the boy needs a hot meal cooked for him.
  • Has his JSA been cancelled because he left his job voluntarily or been sacked? Are you sure he really doesn't know the reason or could it be because he doesn't want to tell you what it is?

I've never heard of JSA being stopped with no reason given.

Surely, even if he can't actually live at home, he could eat there most days?
  • His JSA could have been sanctioned if he has been working and claiming, and he has refused to attend an Interview Under Caution.

He does not need money, he needs actual food. Even a healthy 20 yo would use that £50 to buy convenience food or takeaways, so taking into account his MH problems, he needs either a food parcel or prepared meals.

I don't live at home, but when I am poorly my parents bring me meals. They just make an extra one, keep it in the oven and my Dad brings it over once they have finished theirs.

I would agree with those that have said there is more to the JSA problem than you know. The claim would not be cancelled for no reason. Either there has been a misunderstanding, or the claim has been cancelled/ sanctioned for some reason.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • OP can you not contact his SW and demand that they take some kind of action. If your son is suffering from MH surely he cannot sort out his benefits and needs someone to act on his behalf. The CAB could do this but they would need authority to act on his behalf.
