Non Ikea bed frame to fit 160cm mattress?

Options
Hi bit of a reverse from usual questions on where to buy mattresses that are 160cm wide - I am after a bed frame that will fit my 160cm wide mattress that we had specially made a couple of years ago.

Looking to change bedroom decor and want to change Ikea pine bed frame for something else but as our mattress cost a small fortune we are not keen to lose that plus it is very comfortable.
Possible is the Grinstad frame in Ikea just wondering what other non Ikea options there are (have seen Habitat do some but v expensive)

Thanks

Paint the pine frame to match the room?

    Very MSE......
  • Thanks did actually consider either painting or covering the frame with something to change it but decided that probably wouldn't look very good. And painting just on its own doesn't change the rather old fashioned shape of the headboard and footboard

We will be looking out on ebay for matching Malm furniture so we are money saving there!

What you need to consider is how much longer the mattress will last, as doing it this way around could prove more expensive in the future.

What is the make and model of your existing mattress?

The other options are to get either a divan base made to the size of your mattress. Many smaller independent manufacturers would be happy to do this, some of the bigger manufacturers automate production, so tend to charge more for special sizes. Or have a wooden bedstead made to order (same as with the divan, go for smaller manufacturers).
  • Hi Tim
Can't remember exactly the make. We had it specially made through Dreams (so probably overpaid!) and it is a pocket sprung with a layer of memory foam on top - it was one recommended by our chiropractor and is indeed very comfortable. At only 2 years old I feel the mattress has plenty of life left yet I hope!

Any specific recommendations for a wooden bedstead made to order - what manufacturers. Already checked on your own site first :)
  • Have you considered the Malm bedframe - cheap but very sturdy - if you are looking at Malm furniture as well? The bedside tables are pretty cool, they attach to the side of the headboard. (Did anyone notice Micah Paris had one on celebrity come dine with me, in her rented flat, or was it just me? :o)

Yes the Malm in Oak was my favourite but it is pretty low down. We probably will go with the Malm 3+3 chest of drawers depending on final choice of frame though. Thanks

might actually look into cutting the pine "bedknobs" off and getting the head and foot board and side parts properly covered by an upholster as there is nothing wrong structually with the bed frame itself -mmm thats a bit more MSE!!!?

Doesn't it have a label on it?

One of my concerns it that you are using a non turn pocket sprung mattress on a slatted base. How far apart are the slats?

Yes, it is pretty low down compared to normal divans etc. We don't find it a problem though, as long as the mattress is deep enough that you dont bash into the edge when getting in/out :rotfl:

Thanks - will check later as cannot remember name - all i do know is it is the best mattress by a country mile we have ever had

Slats are pretty close together as we added a few extra in. Should we look for a solid base bed then if having one made? Any idea on those manufacturers would be great thanks Tim.

Even if we have to have a new mattress in a few years there are plenty of mattress manufacturers who make special sizes at very little additional to regular mattreses and the extra 3 or 4 inches width does make a difference!

PS I am being dragged over to Ikea tonight so we may end up with the Malm who knows!

All you have to do is lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slatts. My concern is that you may have already damaged the springs. Pocket sprung only mattresses don't like gaps much bigger than 1".
