Orange upgrade vs. new contract?

I have been a Pay Monthly customer of Orange for nearly 8 years.

I am now out of contract :j and was hoping to get the new HTC Hero phone for free. When I rang them they said they could do this on an 18-month contract on a £35 per month talkplan (apparently I am a level 4 loyalty customer whatever that means).

HOWEVER if I go to Dialaphone I can get the same talkplan but slightly better (free unlimited data vs. 500mb data per month) and the first 6 months would be half price. Plus I would get free delivery (vs. £3.99 with Orange - every little helps!) and up to £50 cashback with Quidco (I think - new to Quidco so could be wrong!).

Is there any benefit of renewing by original contract with Orange? Or do I just cancel it and take out a new one with Dialaphone?

If you don't mind losing your old number (or transferring to another networks payg and then back again). Then no, the better deal seems to be with Dialaphone.

Did you get that offer with upgrades or retentions ? Retentions has the better offers, so if that was with upgrades call back tell them you want to cancel and that will get you to retentions...

The unlimited data you have been quoted by dialaphone actually has a fair usage policy of 500MB. Funilly enough, I have just discovered that I have been given two 500MB bundles with no extra charge!
Try to imagine nothing ever existed...

I got it thru upgrades although it wasn't their first offer. No, I don't really want to lose my old number but am happy to port across to someone else and then go back. Just infuriates me that being loyal for 8 years does not pay off!
  • Yes, i was sold unlimited internet with dial-a-phone before they mentioned the limits so yes on orange and vodafone there is a 500MB limit. You will be charged if you exceed it!

You can get better deals if you request a PAC code in the last 30 days of your contract as you will speak to retentions.

    Vodaphone offered me at first
Original Contract(900mins, unl text, 500mb internet)
Original Contract, £45 per month 30 day rolling
Original Contract but 1/2 price, £22.50 per month, 18 months.

    Vodaphone Upgrade team
New contract(600mins, unl text, 500mb internet)
New contract, Free 5800 £25 per month, 24 months
New contract, Free 5800 £30 per month, 18 months

    Vodaphone Retentions team
New contract(600mins, unl text, 500mb internet)
New contract, Free 5800 £19 per month, 18 months

In the end i changed to orange thou.

  • Argh! Just asked for my PAC code and they gave it to me, no questions asked! Does that mean I am now obliged to switch providers?

No. You have 30 days to make up your mind.

Hold fire, though and you will probably be called by retentions again.
  • If you do not use the PAC code, then i know vodafone will just renew your contract on 30 day rolling. What you will get now you have your PAC is probably a phone call every few days trying to get you to stay offering you better deals.

Now is a good time to get the best deals you can find and get them to match it, barter down prices, offer free upgrades too etc.

  • Can I just ask if someone could explain how to port my number from orange contract to (for example) Voda PAYG and then Voda PAYG back to a new Orange contract? I have googled it but can't seem to find anything. Thanks for all your help.
  • Should be simple.

    Request PAC from Orange
Get the Vodafone PAYG in a shop/telephone and give them the PAC code to transfer the number.
When the number is transferred your Orange contract will terminate.

    Request PAC from Vodafone
Get a new orange contract and when you get the new phone/sim, activate it and on the orange https://www.orange.co.uk/activate page is a place for you to enter in the PAC code.
Once the number is transferred your PAYG sim will be dead.

The only thing is i do not know if voda PAYG have a minimum time before you can request a PAC code.

But i also do not see why you are doing this. If orange give you a better deal on a new contract they should use your existing number as its the deal that is changing on your account. PAC codes are meant for moving operators.

Could be she is getting a new phone contract from a cashback site. That's one reason.
