Fume - £80 for lost braces!

Arghhh, as if money wasn't tight enough at the moment, DD3 lost her braces at school yesterday.
Took them out to eat lunch, put them in the braces box, and threw the box away with the rubbish - didn't realise until after school.
Have spoken to the poor caretaker who has tentatively looked through the top of the 4 industrial blue kitchen bins but no avail.
What a total waste of money - why are children so careless!!! It's not even as if I can get hugely cross with her, because she's mortified and it was an accident (she did offer to help the caretaker look but wasn't allowed).
You get the first set free on the NHS, but if they lose them, it's an £80 replacement fee - she only needs them for a few more weeks!
I just need to vent :mad::mad:
Phew - that feels better!

I remember being about 12 years old and having a very expensive brace, cue me going on guide camp and promptly losing it, it turned up a day or so later in a big bag of leaves (!) We were doing some arty farty thing with them and there it was.
I still got told off when I got home.
Can she pay half of the cost with you?,___,

My sympathies! Hadn't she got used to eating with them in? My daughter only takes hers out to clean them and brush her teeth. I told her she'd got to get used to eating with them in her mouth. She really misses chewing gum though.0

DS1 got through 5 sets of these at £120 a set! DS2 is not allowed out of the house with his having already left them in the library, in someones garden, and on his nans bookcase. Weve opted to wear them nights and at home only for a bit longer time because we cant afford to keep buying new sets. Might be an option for you, ask the orthodontist. With Sparkles! :happylove And Shiny Things!0

No unfortunately, they're jaw moving ones as opposed to teeth moving ones, so the ortho told her to take them out to eat (they're top and bottom plates), hence the box. Haven't quite got round the bit about not putting them straight back in after lunch, but lesson learnt I suppose!0 -

That's a definite case for sharing the cost!!!! And here's me moaning at £80! Actually, you've made me a bit nervous, because it's top and bottom that she's lost - do you think they'll double it (breaks out in a cold sweat!!!)0 -
My daughter also has jaw moving ones (needs to bring her bottom jaw forward). She was told to keep hers in.
Bless them, they do look very uncomfortable.0 -
Mine looked similar to this - I'm grateful there is no photographic evidence, sleepovers were particularly embarrassing.,___,

OMG this is like my nightmare..I'm really paranoid about losing mine!! If I have them in their box while I'm eating I'll check the box loads of times to make sure its still there!!!
JackieB, I don't think you are supposed to eat with the braces in??? It would be impossible to do (I have upper and lower, lower like a see through sheild over my teeth)..would be so much easier if you could though!!
edited to say it probably depends on the type of braces you have xYou may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -
