I think that, throgh the nhsbsa, you can also apply for a dependants allowance (which I think is about £1500) and the childcare grant, which pays around 80% of your childcare fees. I don't know if these are means tested, and therefore may be affected by your oh's wages, but if you look on the bursary forms on the nhsbsa website, you should be able to find out. Good luck!0

Hi Jess
My name's Emma and we're gonna be class mates as I too start at SHU in January.
I currently work at the northern as a support worker and also for Bank. We have lots of student nurses on the ward who also work bank shifts so I wouldn't worry. I think the uni frown on you working in what they consider to be their time, when you should be doing your course work etc, but holidays, weekends etc. is fine with them. The key is to not tell everyone how much you're working then you wont get in trouble and lets face it with a mortgage and kids to support not working isn't an option.
See you in Jan!:j

Hi Emma :hello:
Yeh! It's great to hear from a future classmate, I'm getting really excited and just can't wait for January! I think it's probably a good idea to fit shifts around weekends and holidays, I think we get 4 weeks off over christmas don't we? I know we only get 10 weeks in total but you could earn quite a bit in 10 weeks. Did you apply through clearing and get interviewed in July or did you apply earlier?
Thanks everyone for replying, some good ideas and lots of information. Just can't wait to start now!!!!

Hi there, im a 3rd year nursing student:hello:
The dependants allowance is means tested, but I believe that child care allowance is not.
If you find it hard financially you could try applying to your Uni for the access to learning fund (ALF) This fund helps those that are in financial difficulty, its really worth while applying. I was awarded over £2,000 last year which really helped out.
