My biggest worry was the mayo/sludge in the coolant bottle, but now that you mention that it is quite stubborn to get rid of from previous head gasket failures, I am more at ease. I was using a paint brush every day for 3 months to clean out any of the mayo that was accessible in the bottle. It just keeps coming back after every drive. I have noticed though that is far less now, and my oil level seems to be fine.

Oh, and what is faity liquid?

    Thanks again guys.

Just an update on the problem I have been experiencing.

The temperature gauge is rising in higher increments now after around 35 minutes of driving, and after around 50 minutes, the needle seems to settle between 100 and 110 degrees. Today, it reached 120 degrees (one notch away from the RED!), and so I had to turn on my heater and AC at full blast to bring it down to 90 degrees (not very nice since it was 24 degrees outside, and even warmer inside!).

There wasn't any smoke coming from the bonnet and the needle never reached the red, though I am sure it would have if I hadn't started the heater.

Does this sound like a sticking fan switch, bad water pump/thermostat or bad head gasket? I am positive this isn't normal..?

it could be all or any of them.
the first thing to do is get the thermostat out, this is the cheapest option.

run it without the thermostat for a bit. or if your feeling slightly geeky you could test at which temperature your thermostat opens at,it should be marked on the side of it.

It's funny, because the thermostat got changed with the cracked housing less than a month ago! Maybe the thermostat they placed in was faulty?

I wish I had the guts to tinker with my car, but I'm ashamed to admit I wouldn't even know how to change spark plugs or change my oil!

Does any know a trustworthy and reliable VW specialist in London? I feel as though I can't keep trusting the guys that did my reconditioned engine as something always crops up, and I have been been bitten by too many mechanics just trying to squeeze me for money .

As goldy says test the thermostat my puting in in a pan of boiling water. You should see it move about 3 or 4 mm to allow water through.

Duff brand new ststs are very common, always best to the above test even with a brand new one;)

Right, I'll be on the look out for this manual. So am I correct in saying that dodgy thermostats can cause the temp to drop AND rise above 90 on the golf. I only seem to come across threads on the internet complaining of the needle dropping from 90 or never reaching it.

    Thanks again guys.

No not at all. But they can be responsible for the temp going of the clock as you describe.

To be honest I think the system may still be air locked:confused:
