ITV: Jonathan Maitland investigates what the future holds for millions of Britons who have saved for years for their retirement, but now face financial hardship following massive pension fund shortfalls. He brings together three families with a pensions expert to try to find out some answers.

Channel 4: The current affairs programme looks at one of the biggest surprises of the recession, middle class unemployment. As the number of people out of work reaches 2.5 million, Dispatches follows the experiences of several people who are desperately in search of a job, with some going to extraordinary lengths in an attempt to secure one.

Can't decide... I think the channel 4 one for me.

Job marketing for Hamleys toy store, £85k job, posh house, 2 kids in private school and stay at home mum wife.

He doesn't have a marketing qualification. He spends 5-6 hours/day looking for a job. He's been advised to get a marketing qualification, but he doesn't see why he should as he's had 25 years' experience in marketing.

Office of National Statistics say the worst hit profession is architecture with a 650% increase in unemployment.

Also hit: Law, town planning, engineering.

Next Aynesbury (sp?), home of Zoe Taylor - she lost her job as an HR Director 2 months ago - £90k/year, almost 3x as much as her RAF officer hisband. Married with 2 kids.

Got an interview for a major brand - and she has a 100% record of getting a job so far. She didn't get asked back for a 2nd interview.

Adrian Nicholls, Sales Manager. Big house, place in France ... well off.

10 months ago he was made redundant. He has signed on, since losing his job he's had £30k of debts. He now does door to door catalogue sales. From £60k/year to a few quid a week.

He lives in the West Midlands - where more than 1 in 10 are unemployed.

It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Matt Webb isn't claiming/hasn't signed on. He's in month 5 of his job hunt. He doesn't think the money he'd get is worth the hassle of getting it. And he's not the only one.

Currently 750,000 classified as unemployed but not claiming JSA. Many of these hidden unemployed are "middle class professionals". The money he would get from JSA wouldn't make a dent. £1000/month mortgage, there's £12k/year in private school fees he has to find. He's asked his father to help out a little bit.

Zoe Taylor's 3 month redundancy period just came to an end and she hasn't got a job - so she's signing on now. She's worked for 22 years, she's 38, she's never been to a job centre before.
